Although S.U.R. as a concept of a small improvised studio only emerged in the end of 2006, when for the first time ever the complete material for someone
else's album (Libido: Drugic enkrat) was recorded here, the actual
"studio", or, rather, a room with some stuff, where its founder mused over various tunes, sounds, and cans of beer, has existed without a name for years.
His first project with an actual goal was making the music for a physical theatre performance The Tunnel by Sebastjan Staric in 1998.
Over the years a relatively large amount of work has been done here (if you take into account that the founder and abuser of the studio aspires to be a
lazy bastard but, alas, never quite gets there), either contributing to other projects or working on independent ones. Details are under the PROJECTS
section.
S.U.R. stands for "samostalna ugostiteljska radnja" or "independent catering service". This denotes the unique position that the
artists who come to record stuff in the studio enjoy – apart from being able to lovingly improvise without any deadlines (except from the ones they set
for themselves) to achieve interesting results, and besides napping on the couch and watching TV while knobs and buttons are being turned and pushed in
the studio (if they dislike delving into the nuances of production), they also get beer, spritzers, an occasional soft drink and lunches there (we're
talking home cooking!), and their own room where they can crash in the evening. The latter services are provided even more often now that the studio has
moved to the beautiful seaside town of Izola, where the aforementioned artists also like to visit without actually recording anything.
S.U.R. has been catering to penniless artists since 1998, and it has an uncanny knack for not being around projects with decent budgets.
ABOUT THE FOUNDER AND ABUSER OF S.U.R. STUDIO
Borut Praper, the founder and, for the most part, the main abuser of the peculiar little home studio, started off as a budding young pianist as a kid...
Which he came to dislike after 6 years of music school and turned into a creepy teenage metalhead at the age of 13. So he started playing drums, first to
himself in his parents' attic (oh! the pride and joy they must have felt), then in numerous projects of various genres for the last 15 years.
His first band, Ground Zero from Maribor, was, in one of its mutations, joined by Marko Djukic as a singer and author of lyrics. A couple of years after
that Marko started working on theatre performances and soon invited Borut to participate in that. Thus Borut started writing and recording music for
theatre performances together with Stojan Kralj; this later evolved into the project Juice Connection. During the years and through heaps of work learning
a bit about knobs and buttons was inevitable, and his relatively rudimentary familiarity with piano finally proved useful.
SUR as a band, whose material has been one of
the main projects of the S.U.R. Studio, began to take shape in the end of the year 2001 as a spin-off of the music for the physical theatre performance
Lust by the director and choreographer Sebastjan Staric, when Borut felt an urge to do something a bit more organised and get it published.

Last Legs
A collaboration between the songwriter Dusan Rebolj and Borut Praper, this time in the role of arranger / musician / producer. The material has been
completed and mastered. Waiting for (possible) publishing.

The SUR project is still alive and well. Currently working on some new tracks as well as original
soundtracks for theatre performances and video.
