I have been writing and performing music for a little over 8 years now. I started out doing an open mic every Tuesday night in Ventura, CA at the Garden Village Cafe, which more recently became The Selah Cafe, and even more recently shut down. The cafe was a place I could call home and much like home, it was a place where I could say that I grew up in the aspect of my musical life. When I drove my amateur ass out to The City of Angels (about 60 miles from home) in search of other 'open mics' that were as equally open and welcoming, I was hit with the harsh truth that it probably wouldn't be the same anywhere else. I met a lot of other aspiring musicians, some with big hearts and bigger dreams. I've played restaurants like Taix in LA, places like Hardrock Cafe, the famous highland grounds open mic, McCabes open mic, a bunch of others...I even went up North and did a few there. I began to realize that this little apple didn't fall too far from the tree of dreaming artists. Talent was normal and uniqueness was a virtue. After this, I convinced myself that its got to be more than just a passion and a desire. Dreams were just dreams from that point on. Reality is what it is no matter how you try and fool yourself to think that there will be magic. I know that this is not something that will ever be handed to me. I gotta give to get. My hope is to transcend to selflessness and become a servant to my listeners' needs for music. If it becomes something more of a profession as I progress as a musician and songwriter, then I'm gonna take it, make it, and run with it all the way because very few are ever given the chance to change the world through their craft.
Just found out and feel disgusted. I saw him just a few months ago at the Ventura Mall buying his son the latest Halo game. I had him as a biology teacher in my Junior year at Hueneme High School. He was fun and we had a lot of laughs in that class. He gave me a lot of freedom to break the ice and crack jokes in his class and he would always complement them with a great sense of humor. He also helped me achieve my bench record that I set for the tri-county that year. I was stuck at 265 lbs for a long time. He taught me how to pass that peak. And at 140 lbs that year I maxed 300 lbs, which I tilt my hat out to him because I couldn't have done it without him. His Olympian knowledge, coaching skills, and taking his personal time out to spot me lifting, he was the one. After I graduated and later saw him after nine years, I snuck behind his back and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and said "Hey Felix!" and gave me a big bear hug. He remembered me by name... that's golden. He was not just a Coach, Teacher, but also a good friend and wonderful person. He genuinely cared for all his students. "God-Bless You Coach. My prayers you will hear and they go out to your whole family."
