    Susanne Alleyn's Interests
GeneralThe French Revolution. Duh. OK, also: Paris, Paris, Paris; reading, travel (Europe), the 18th century, the French Revolution, historic cemeteries (especially the Parisian ones!), all things slightly macabre. Theater, cooking, chocolate, chili peppers, Thai food, the French Revolution, Camembert, archaeology, thrift shops, the French Revolution, my three cats, bicycling. Things French (could you guess?) even though I'm mostly German, perish the thought . . . Attending live theater; performing in live theater/musical theater (I'm a high soprano).

Did I mention the French Revolution?

MusicClassical, mostly: Mozart, Prokofiev, Bach, a mixed bag. Pieces that have an "edge" to them. A couple of operas. Favorite guilty pleasure: Gilbert & Sullivan. Certain Broadway musicals: Les Miserables; anything by Stephen Sondheim (except for the awful, pretentious Passion), especially Sweeney Todd (loved the movie!!!), Follies, and A Little Night Music; some of the old classics like My Fair Lady, Gypsy, Show Boat, etc....; though I loathe some others of the old classics, The Music Man and Carousel being at the top of my hitlist. Favorite guilty pleasure: it's got to be The Scarlet Pimpernel !
MoviesAnything about the French Revolution. Unfortunately the bad films far outweigh the good ones, but they're still fun.

Others: A weird mixture of course. Historical and fantasy epics: Lord of the Rings trilogy; Amadeus; Interview with the Vampire; A Man For All Seasons; A Tale of Two Cities (the 1935 version with Ronald Colman, of course); The Pianist--I'll watch Adrien Brody in just about anything, but this one is such an incredible work of art, not just about its historical period, but really a film about loneliness--oh, just go watch it.

....Casablanca; The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (and hopefully upcoming sequels); Pirates of the Caribbean (the first one, dammit); Monty Python and the Holy Grail; just about anything with Adrien Brody, Johnny Depp, Hugh Jackman, or Kevin Kline in it. Lots more but I can never think of these endless lists. Favorite guilty pleasure: the Star Wars and Harry Potter movies.

TelevisionBuffy, Buffy, Buffy (and Angel). RIP....

All the Law and Orders. The Simpsons. Bones. Masterpiece Theatre stuff (I, Claudius, Poldark, and the 1989 Tale of Two Cities at the top of the list). 1995 Pride & Prejudice. The French TV productions of Les Miserables and The Count of Monte Cristo (with Gerard Depardieu). The Scarlet Pimpernel (with Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews and the brilliant Ian McKellen). The Muppet Show. The Star Trek universe (though I couldn't get into Enterprise). X-Files. Any of the Agatha Christie adaptations with David Suchet as Hercule Poirot or Joan Hickson as Miss Marple--though the makers of the current Marple series should be ashamed of themselves.

BooksMysteries, classics, fantasy. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy, Dorothy L Sayers's Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries, anything by Agatha Christie, Steven Saylor, Elizabeth Peters, Ellis Peters, historical mysteries in general; Jane Austen, A Tale of Two Cities, The Red and the Black, Les Miserables, Quatre-Vingt-Treize (also Victor Hugo, his only French Rev novel), the Narnia books, A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel (best French Rev novel ever), lots of other lesser but entertaining Rev novels, many more including my own novels!
HeroesSuccessful writers who are not Danielle Steel, Nora Roberts, and those of their schlocky ilk.

About me:

Mystery writer.

Amateur historian.

Bookseller.

Insufferable knowitall about almost anything having to do with my primary obsession, the French Revolution (and writing mystery novels about it).

"Book Nerd" or "Word Nerd" just about sums it up . . .

I'm the author of two historical mystery novels set in the French Revolution: Game of Patience and A Treasury of Regrets, featuring Parisian sleuth Aristide Ravel, published by St. Martin's Press. These are the first of what I hope will be a longish series of mysteries set in Paris just before, during, and after the Revolution; the third in the series, The Cavalier of the Apocalypse, set in 1786, will probably be out in early 2009.

These novels are available worldwide where English-language books are sold, or badger your local library into buying copies if it doesn't have them. And since an author survives on word of mouth, if you love them, please spread the word to fellow history/mystery readers.

Come visit my author website -- susannealleyn.com -- to read more about my books, sample some chapters, find out how to get free (yes, free!) signed copies of Game or Treasury, and sign up for my very occasional newsletter to get the latest updates.

Nice things the reviewers said about A Treasury of Regrets:

"Alleyn skillfully depicts her characters' flaws and strengths while plotting a fine puzzle mystery. If your patrons enjoy historicals and have not yet discovered Alleyn, put her latest on the must-read list." -- Library Journal (starred review)

A Treasury of Regrets is also on Library Journal's list of the top five mystery novels of 2007!

"This is an excellent choice for mystery fans and for supplemental reading that supports both history and French culture curricula." -- School Library Journal

"A Treasury of Regrets combines the best in history and mystery. . . . The mystery itself is artfully plotted and compelling; I was in due suspense as to whodunit." -- The Historical Novels Review

"Ms. Alleyn skillfully portrays a household of suspects where crimes multiply. . . . The author captures the atmosphere of a nation struggling toward a social and political unity untainted by the irrational violence and cruelty of those who toppled the monarchy. Ravel is a realistic and appealing observer of a developing society." -- The Washington Times

"With a light, literate hand, Alleyn includes a wealth of detail about life in France during the Republican period, while ratcheting up the tension with every chapter. Fans of Charles O'Brien (Mute Witness) and Baroness Orczy (The Scarlet Pimpernel) will be delighted." -- Publishers Weekly

(Read more at my website!)

I'm also the author of A Far Better Rest, a reimagining of A Tale of Two Cities, just because I wanted to see Dickens's great story and wonderful character Sydney Carton placed in a more realistic historical setting. (Mr. Dickens wrote a classic novel that is fine literature--to which I tried to stay true--but bad history.) AFBR is out of print now, but you can find a used or remaindered copy 'most anywhere online. Enjoy.

I think guillotines are pretty cool and I probably know more about Charles-Henri Sanson (the executioner of Paris who guillotined Louis XVI and many, many other people) than anyone else on the planet. Though I welcome challenges.

I read French moderately well and speak (and write) it extremely badly. If you send me a message in French, please expect an answer in mangled French--or I just may give up and use English . . .

Who I'd like to meet:

People who believe that first edition, hardcover mystery novels make great Christmas or birthday presents.

Also Adrien Brody and/or Johnny Depp, if we're talking fantasies here. For real, fellow French Rev fans; fellow mystery readers; serious and/or professional writers and interesting people in Albany, NY, USA.

A Treasury of Regrets was so much fun to read. I knew very little about this period in history, now I am motivated to learn more. And no...although I tried, I could not predict the ending! Thank you so much for an enjoyable read. I look forward to more intriguing mysteries with Ravel!

I just ordered A Treasury of Regrets today! It has been ages since I was able to sit, relax and read something solely for my own pleasure. Your book has been on the top of my list for months. I am really looking forward to this.
Thanks Susanne!
