    Susan's Interests
GeneralReading! I'm hopelessly addicted to Dick Francis, Max Allan Collins, Elliott Baker, Jacques Futrelle, Noel Streatfeild, Nancy Drew, Donna Parker & Connie Blair (see above), most girls' series books from the '40's and '50's, and Ayn Rand. I'll also read romantic fiction if it's well written -- I like Judith McNaught and Jennifer Crusie. I have a great weakness for wonderful dialogue and terrific love scenes. I also collect Disney pins -- if you've been to the Disney parks recently, you know what I mean -- and trade enthusiastically on Pinpics.com. Totally fascinated with the Law of Attraction and have read deeply into this as well as seen THE SECRET (my son Colin is featured in the book version!) Also run my own list on Yahoo! about this -- Check out The Attractor Factor group on Yahoo! to find us. A huge baseball fan since the age of 16 -- dyed-in-the-wool New York Mets fan especially! Love the history of the game and esp. the history of the Mets -- they're a team who understand how to make magic! (Well, some of the time.) Love American history -- esp. the early '60's, World War II, the Civil War, the War of 1812 and the Titanic (yeah, I know that's not really AMERICAN history). Also love famous real-life unsolved mysteries and always want to know what really happened! Am always interested in the latest on the craft of writing. Also love to know about organizations and events promoting literacy in general -- a very good thing!
MusicGrew up on Broadway show scores and movie soundtracks, and what can I say? Still love them. Esp. adore Lerner & Loewe, Jule Styne, Rodgers & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter and Gershwin. Love a lot of John Williams' film scores -- RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, SUPERMAN, JFK, etc. -- but have heard STAR WARS way too much! Love Bill Conti's score for THE RIGHT STUFF -- simply majestic! Also love Disney music -- the old movie scores, the new movie scores, and surprisingly, a lot of the music written esp. for the parks -- it's wonderful! Love a lot of '60's pop songs and standards, a lot of WWII popular songs -- and also love old TV themes (how can you not love MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE?) Probably far to the right of middle of the road -- but that's okay!
MoviesRomantic comedies, great thrillers, big epic movies with an uplifting and optimistic theme -- SABRINA (both versions), ROMAN HOLIDAY (Hepburn of course), TRUE LIES, TITANIC, MIRACLE, THE RIGHT STUFF, PEARL HARBOR, IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (one of my all-time favorites), SOME LIKE IT HOT, THIS PROPERTY IS CONDEMNED (a great guilty pleasure), almost anything with Audrey Hepburn or Natalie Wood, also love Jack Lemmon, Robin Williams, Clark Gable and Hugh Jackman (we're all entitled to our fantasies!)
TelevisionEvery time I really love something, it ends up cancelled -- but from childhood I adored DARK SHADOWS and HERE COME THE BRIDES; more recently, AMERICAN DREAMS, THE WEST WING, and now DANCING WITH THE STARS. Absolutely HATE almost all reality shows (DWTS excepted) -- because I think they're deliberately set up to humiliate the participants, something I loathe. Will never knowingly watch anything that looks down on either viewer or participant -- which eliminates virtually everything else, including the nightly news!
BooksATLAS SHRUGGED, OF HUMAN BONDAGE, anything by Dick Francis, Max Allan Collins' disaster and Nathan Heller series, well-written historical fiction (this lets out most romantic stuff), anything by Noel Streatfeild but particularly her beautiful SHOES series, love well-written mysteries steeped in character (have you seen Carrie Bebris's series based on Jane Austen? Sensational!), enjoy Jacques Futrelle's lighthearted mystery novels, good love stories (and oddly, some romance novels fall in that category), and classics like TOM SAWYER, JANE EYRE, and PRIDE & PREJUDICE, which are still eminently readable. Also love great biographies and non-fiction like THE MAN WHO FLEW THE MEMPHIS BELLE and SEABISCUIT. Will always read about baseball (DIAMONDS FOR LORI AND ME is a favorite), love William Goldman's inside-show-biz books, and can always be persuaded to pick up yet another book on dieting and nutrition -- because this time maybe I'll find the answer that works for me!
HeroesIn no particular order -- Chuck Yeager, JFK, the passengers & crew of United Flight 93, Dick Francis, The Scarlet Pimpernel (who cares if he's fictional?), Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Carole Lombard, Amelia Earhart, Anne Sullivan Macy, Desi Arnaz, Michael Jordan and Bill Gates!

About me:
I may be 50, but I still haven't quite grown up. To this day, I keep, cherish and re-read my Nancy Drew, Connie Blair and Donna Parker book collection. I really do believe in the power of wishing on a star. By profession I'm an author. I've written 16 young-adult books under contract (ie, all published) -- both fiction and non-fiction, ranging from Y/A girls' series work to how-to books to biographies and even a history of Alcatraz, which is coming out in spring 2008. I've also written screenplays, stage plays (both were produced and I helped co-direct them both), and shorter fiction, as well as some sports writing, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My most important published work so far is FORWARD TO CAMELOT, co-authored with Kevin Finn in 2003 and published by Authorhouse (visit our website at www.ForwardtoCamelot.com). The book became a #6 Amazon bestseller in Sci-Fi/Fantasy, took honors in 2 literary competitions and has been optioned by a Hollywood producer for translation to film. Keep your fingers crossed! I just finished my latest novel, STEALING FIRE, which is currently entered in Amazon's Breakthrough Novel Contest AND with my agent in New York. I was born in New York City, raised in New Rochelle (17 miles north of the city), went to public schools and then to the University of Southern California (broadcast journalism degree), and then directly into the entertainment business, where I spent 12 bumpy but most interesting years. I began writing professionally in 1988 and have done it ever since, with a break of about 7 years to get into network marketing, which gave me a new lease on life and a new attitude. Last year I founded and chaired the first-ever East Cooper Authors Festival in my current home of Mount Pleasant, SC -- where 18 professional authors visited 17 schools in one day to discuss writing and literacy. Big success! Now, armed with attitude and optimism, I sally forth to become rich and famous!
Who I'd like to meet:
People who think life is fabulous! This includes people with a wonderful sense of humor, people who read (I'm a chain reader the way other people are chain smokers!), people who love Disney (I'm a Disney addict and an inveterate Disney pin collector), even people who may have read some of my books and like them -- I'm always open to meeting fans! I love people who are busy doing things that excite them, who see challenges as opportunities, not excuses to give up, and who KNOW that tomorrow is going to be even better than today. I love people who may disagree with me but extend me the courtesy of believing I'm entitled to my opinion. (I'm willing to extend the same to them.) And most especially -- I want to meet PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN MAGIC. Are you that kind of person? Let me know, please -- would love to know you!

Hello Everybody!

Friday morning Sept 4, on Turner Classic Movies, Bonita will appear in two classic films. The first, starting at 7am Eastern is the very rare gem HITLER'S CHILDREN from 1943.

This propaganda piece starts in 1933. Prof. Nichols' American school in Berlin is next door to a school for the Hitler Youth. Karl, from the latter, is attracted to German-American Anna, but events lead to their separation. Later, at the outbreak of war in Europe, Anna is removed from Nichols' school on presumption of German citizenship. Nichols becomes obsessed with finding her, as Anna undergoes a rather lurid odyssey through the Nazi nightmare. This movie is very rare and has not yet been released on home video.

Next at 10 am (Eastern) we have SEVEN MILES FROM ALCATRAZ made in 1942. After Pearl Harbor, convicts at Alcatraz prison live in fear of bomb attacks, driving Champ Larkin and his pal Jimbo to a desperate escape attempt which lands them on a tiny lighthouse island, where they take over. The five inhabitants are stymied in their efforts to summon aid. But the island also figures in the schemes of a big Nazi spy ring; which will win out, the gangsters' greed or their patriotism? Bonita stars as Anne Porter in this rarely shown film. It too has yet to be released on home video.

Please check your local listings and set your DVRs or video recorders NOW to capture these two great films.

If you are a classic movie lover, you will not be disappointed!
