Influences
i grew up on songs of the reformation, "air on a g string", ivan rebroff, and symphonic sounds, but my first albums with drums that i heard were Sheena Easton, Thriller, early Bruce Cockburn, Harlequin, Kansas, Lionel Richie and early U2. i love JONI MITCHELL, sufjan stevens, laurie anderson, Issa (Jane Siberry), standup bass [Michel Donato, Paul Chambers, MJ Dandeneau], imogen heap, Ben Charest (les Triplettes de Belleville), the Funk Brothers, Lyndell Montgomery, JOAN ARMATRADING, Pamela Means and Vince Guaraldi. I love that Brad Mehldau covers Radiohead. STEVIE WONDER has created some very very fantastic songs. BILL EVANS was a magician. rest his soul. Veda Hille. Sting. Christine Fellows. yeah. ani difranco
Sounds Like
Joni Mitchell and Ricky Lee Jones ate pineapple for brunch and caught up with Tori Amos for a circus-style bike ride.
View Suss’s EPK
Süss sounds like Joni Mitchell and Ricki Lee Jones ate pineapple for brunch and went on a wild bike ride with Tori Amos and Jane Siberry.
Süss’s sweet voice accommodates storytelling, hymns of the reformation, jazz, and folk balladry with an edge.
But don’t be fooled. Süss lays bitterness and naivete wide open.
Süss is currently done her first record with juno award winning producer Dan Donahue. It will be released to the public on November 1st! It is coming to cdbaby.com soon!
Süss is a bandleader as well as a solo performer.
She has conceived of and produced several fantastic projects where she led the house band: a live singing drag king show, the Winnipeg PRIDE Circus cabaret 2005, the International Drag King Extravaganza 7 live performance brunch in Winnipeg, the 2006 Winnipeg PRIDE cabaret - Inside the Emerald City where she played the wizard, Dorothy, and Marian the Librarian, as well as "She who searches for Kitten Tongue", and a nonette at the vintage Park Theatre. Süss has hosted several Women’s Cabarets, including events for International Women’s Day and Femfest (Sarasavati Productions).
Hi Suss! Just dropping by to say hi and hope you have a wonderful summer! I'm in England right now, totally sunburned and hayfevery-playing a show tonite! Take care, thank you again for a wonderful time in Winnipeg in April! Hope to come back! Hug, Sarah
Just had to drop by to hear BIKE, sista!! Still totally want to do a show together soon - things have been a little odd in Lindsey land lately (holy L's batman!) Let's put it together when I'm back from touring in June ok? :) Pretty please?
suss the "women in the round" show last night was absolutely amazing, it was so much fun to enjoy and all my "i love women making music art" happy zones within my body were touched. thank you so much for making it happen in winnipeg. what a wonderful gift.
The CD is wonderful, Suss. And it SOUNDS so good. Congrats to you and Dan on the production.
You mentioned about the grand piano and I was taking particular note of it. It certainly does add a "grand" quality to the sound on those tracks... particularly on Waltz For Clare which is a big fave - and to me, the song has a joint classical and whimsical feeling to it which is quite attractive.
Anyway, I love the CD and I'm so happy to have it.
Great to see you last night (and get your CD). Had to rush home to take care of a few things (didn't realize how late it had gotten when the show ended) so I apologize for not taking my leave. I hope we find time to conflab about music and stuff in the near future.
I really enjoyed your tunes. Loved seeing you do Waltz For Clare live (gosh, your keyboard playing is wonderful) and that was a fab jam version of Bike! The new song you did (the title escapes me now) REALLY struck me. I so want to hear that again.
HEY SUSS!!! IT'S GONNA BE FUUUUNNNNN! I love the doubletime outro feel for Didn't Hurt. Still my favourite of yours. And among my favourites of all story songs.
haha! The first shot I had at the bar was a mysterious clear substance the barkeep gave me! lol and I believe the next one was two creamy mystery shots lol. And then there was the infamous pirate shot which was some random green shot with chunks lol...Probably wasn't the smartest drinker that night but boy was it fun!!!
Suss my dear I'm so sorry I missed you last night! I fell right asleep after getting home and when I woke up it was far too late to make the show. I'm so sorry but 16 hours on a bus and no sleep after a day of skiing really takes it toll on the human body lol...next one fer sure tho
Your new songs... can you get arrested for filling my day with sweetness? If so, come with me quietly. I'm making a citizen's arrest. Anything you sing may be used against you. :)
YAY!!!!! I'm on a ski trip and get back that day!!! Clearly the most fabulous of all coincidences!!! :D I will try my hardest to make it down...if the treacherous BC mountains don't kill me lol
I think you may be right. And I think there may have been some minor pandemonium taking place at the time, so it was little more than a brief exchange of pleasantries.
Perhaps we can stretch out the pleasantries a wee bit the next time we meet.
Hey Suss! As soon as I get caught up, I'll be adding you to my page. :)
btw... We did in fact meet previously in person, albeit briefly, through Eve Rice. I'll be sure to introduce myself again when I catch one of your future performances.
Salut!!
Thanks for the add and for taking a listen....any comment or feedback would be great!..much appreciated!..i'm loving this time of year, any don't work too hard!!have a good Tuesday!!
Youna :)
