Music
Music is the thread of my life. I am currently working on a project which will allow me to revisit, by examining the music of my life, how I got here and why. I'm pretty excited about it, actually.
Favorite styles: ambient, new wave 80s, songs with quirky lyrics, modified classical, progressive rock, techno, French pop, soundtrack scores, Irish blue grass, piano
Favorite instruments: mandolin, electric fiddle, synthesizer, piano, female vocalists
Favorite Artists: Alison Krauss, Leahy, The Police/Sting, Rodney Crowell, Crash Test Dummies, Cibo Matto, Daft Punk, Yes, Flaming Lips, Philip Glass, Nickel Creek/Chris Thile, Imogen Heap/Frou Frou, Seal, Keane, Dave Matthews Band, Shawn Colvin, Jonathin Elias, Vangelis, James Newton Howard, Sarah Brightman, Aimee Mann, Wendy Carlos, Mindy Smith, Anggun
I love movies! When I moved to Austin in 2003, the thing I was excited about the most was living close to Vulcan Video, Alamo Drafthouse and the Dobie.
I get a little thrill out of collecting the ones that are my most favorite.
Examples ...Amelie, Moulin Rouge, Blade Runner, Silence of the Lambs, The Piano, Love the Hard Way, The Bridges of Madison County, Home for the Holidays, Roman Holiday, Jack and Sarah, Holiday, David Lynch's Dune, Somewhere in Time, Lovesick, Bad Santa, Pretty in Pink, Snow White: A Tale of Terror, Lost in Translation, Mannequin, Butterflies are Free, Harold and Maude, Metropolis (the Anime remake), Brazil, The Last Unicorn, A Thousand Clowns, Garden State, Close Encounters, City of Lost Children, Alegria, The Station Agent, The 10th Kingdom, Trainspotting, Daft Punk's Interstella 5555, Secretary, Mad About Mambo, Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, Monsters Ball, The Thornbirds ,
Broken English, Waitress, Charlie Bartlett, Little Miss Sunshine, The Darjeeling Limited, Juno, Enchanted , The Painted Veil, Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus, Tattoo: A Love Story, Deception, Zack and Miri Make a Porno
And I am now (im)patiently awaiting the release of The Time Traveler's Wife ... whenever they decide to release it.
I would say that I am a bonafide tv-holic. They should make a 12 step program for this. But seriously, there is something both soothing and invigorating about a well conceived serial plotline with characters that are allowed to evolve.
Having grown up in a household where tv was an intermittent (and heavily restricted) pleasure, I guess I had to learn to really commit to loving the shows I planned to watch. For that, I guess I should thank my parents. And for the fact that, were it not for my mother's nostalgic love for the original Star Trek, we might never have had a TV at all. I can remember hanging on every episode with dedicated attention before I even knew how to read. And it just kind of spiraled from there.
My favorite shows of all time: Beauty and the Beast (It sort of defined a lot of who I am when I saw it as a child and, as an adult, rewatching it, I suddenly have become conscious of just what a phenominal love story it was), The X-Files (One of the first shows I ever came to like basically on my own and watched in defiance of my parents. Mulder and Scully are still one of my favorite tv couples), Buffy: the Vampire Slayer (Probably THE all time favorite. There was just so much to love about this show!), Battlestar Galactica (We, the fans, have been jerked around over and over by this show but I have to love it no matter what. Even Joss Whedon thinks it's the greatest thing ever. Yuh! It's that good!)
Other notable favorites from my lifetime: Star Trek: the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, Dark Shadows: the Revival, Animaniacs, Earth 2, Dawson's Creek, Felicity, Roswell, Gilmore Girls, A Different World, The Dead Zone, Keen Eddie, Dead Like Me, Carnivale, The Oblongs, Huff!, McLeod's Daughters, Women's Murder Club, Standoff
What I'm watching now: Weeds, Battlestar Galactica, and Dexter (between seasons); Boston Legal (recently ended); Bones; Grey's Anatomy; Family Guy; Pushing Daisies; 30 Rock; Jon and Kate plus 8; True Blood and Fringe.
Books
I think I love collecting books more than actually reading them. The anticipation of reading a really great book is as blissful as anything. Perhaps, for this reason, I like to savor my books. Or maybe it's not so much savoring as it is getting distracted by other things. The experience of getting so lost in a book that I can't put it down is one almost more blissful than the anticipation of same. Almost.
My literary taste is more or less all over the map. For a long time I stuck mostly to Sci Fi. My world was turned over, in the 8th grade, after stumbling across Orson Scott Card'sEnder's Game and, thereafter, by it's subsequent sequels and, quite frankly, most everything else he ever wrote (Enchantment, Homebody, Lost Boys) ... at least up until Ender's Shadow and the later works.
I remained faithful to Sci Fi and miscellaneous theoretical fiction for many years (The Giver, Macrolife, Dinotopia, Children of Arable, The Time Traveler's Wife), being fascinated, as I was (and am) by all the mysteries of the universe and the possibilities of the future. Recently that has translated into a profound interest in science fact and the mysteries of reality, God (The God Delusion), science and human nature/biology (Sperm are from Men, Eggs are from Women).
And I also enjoy the funny/wry memoirs and narratives of Douglas Adams, J D Salinger, David Sedaris as well as the not so funny memoirs of anyone else I find interesting (Broken MusicSting, My SergeiEkaterina Gordeeva).
... Or anything else that has a cool cover, a subject-specific interesting topic, a good love story or an otherwise enthralling premise ...
Heroes
* Contortionists or otherwise rediculously flexible people
* The super clever and talented artists at deviantART who seem to be able to pull masterpieces out of thin air.
* Those other skaters at the rink who seem to have no fear and a maddening ability to master new skills as fast as they can see them.
* Sting - who knew his true love the moment he saw her.
* My aunt, Kathy - who commits herself 100% to whatever she decides to do.
* The fruit of her uterus - the one and only, Zoe Bug - who, in the eyes of this former shy and dorky teenager, is bafflingly good at expressing herself and speaking her mind.
A few bio details: * My screen name is in reference to a book (Ender's Game) by Orson Scott Card and a character in it (Jane) who I adore. My real name is Suzanne. * I am a labor and delivery nurse. I keep a night schedule all the time because I have been working nights for over 5 years and am not very good at transitioning. * I wasn't born in Austin but I got here as fast as I could. * I have one sibling, a sister, who is my best friend. * I am not a dog, nor a cat person (so far). My only pets are two white dwarf rabbits, Alliya and Liesel and one Roborovski hamster:
* I'm a liberal/democrat but not particularly interested in politics. * I identify as agnostic for the most part. I'm still working out what it is that I do believe in. I like this quote, about it, by Sting: "I've chosen to live my life without the 'certainties' of faith, but I do maintain a great reverence for the mystery and wonder of our existance, and my agnosticism is a tolerant cousin to my curiosity."

You have a dreamy mind, full of fancy and fantasy.
You have the ability to stay forever entertained with your thoughts.
People may say you're hard to read, but that's because you're so internally focused.
But when you do share what you're thinking, people are impressed with your imagination.
Your result for The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test...
You scored better than half in Geek, earning you the title of:
Pure Geek
. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
It's not that you're a school junkie, like the nerd, and you don't really stand out in a crowd, like the dork, you just have some interests that aren't quite mainstream. Perhaps it's anime, perhaps it's computers, perhaps it's bottlecaps, perhaps it's all of those and more. Your interests take you to events and gatherings that are filled with people you find unusual and beyond-the-pale, but you don't quite consider yourself "of that crowd." Instead, you consider yourself to be fairly normal.
we think that moths are linguistically challenged because, when under normal conditions, we don't hear them speak. however, in the sense of grammar-rules being separate from spoken language (think sign language) and the apparently inborn tendency for human minds to settle upon such grammar rules after a few years of waddling about the earth, my hope was to raise a moth in isolation from any fellow moths and thus stunt any hitherto unknown similar propensity among the moth clan from impressing itself upon said young moth's impressionable mind. however there are a few problems : 1) the baby moth would be a caterpillar, which would mean he might eat my clothes. well, i guess i wouldn't mind a hole here and there in my t-shirts - sharing the wealth, as it were. 2) i could never verify that my moth would be, in fact, linguistically challenged as a result of my method of raising it. 3) moths have such long tongues, all rolled up. actually this has everything to do with eating and nothing to do with linguistics, but thats ok. i dont mind embracing nonsequiturs for the sake of the serenity-inducing pleasure of listing 3 problems. Three is a nice number.
Your outing tonight to see Hamlet (with Philip Glass's work?! How awesome is that!) sounds fabulous, Miss Suzanne! :) I would LOVE to see that. I hope you enjoy it!
How are ya, my neat-o online friend! I hope you're doing well!
This is for you:
"You're the BEST!!
Leave Yesterday Alone (its gone)
Live Today (count your blessings)
Don't Worry About Tomorrow (it may not come)
Dear God, the lady reading this is beautiful, classy & strong, and I love her. Help her live her life to the fullest. Please promote her and cause her to excel above her own expectations. Help her to shine in darkest places, and love where it is impossible to love. Protect her at all times, lift her up when she needs you the most, and let her know that when she walks with you she will always be safe.
Send to all the ladies you love. I just did.
LOVE YOU!!! NOW YOU'RE ON THE CLOCK!!!! TELL 9 SISTERS YOU LOVE THEM INCLUDING ME. GO!!!!"
Those are worthy items. I haven't received mine, and I'm pretty certain I'm supposed to have, but that's alright, because I don't want anymore fake printed money in circulation here--either through well-intentioned socialistic governmental programs or money going overseas to fund imperialistic wars.
Indian cuisine? Oh, Suzanne!
There was an indian guy sitting right next to me in Cell and Molec that smelled just like my favorite indian food...like he still had the spices on him from breakfast. I was thinking, "Lucky!"
According to my professor Dr. Bergel, the indian spice Tumerac has HDACs and HATs inhibitors (proteins) in the nuclei that help unfold DNA for damage repair. A study was conducted with Hela cells and regular cells, in which the HDACs and the HATs inhibitors were applied, and it showed to actually repair the regular cells to a condition of a better state of functioning than it was to begin with, as well as allowing for better repair with the Hela cells.
Right now in cell and molec we're covering exonuclease activity of DNA Pol I, II and III (in the 3'-5' direction), which is a form of proofreading. Polymerases are like a 3-in-1 enzymatic properties deal! They polymerize (in the case of replication), they excise mismatched nucleotides, and they protect, by matching the correct bases together, which also ensures the angle of the bases between the DNA is at the proper angle.
Fascinating, neh?
But yeah. I love indian spices. So how's the Ender in Exile book coming? That was an ebay bid that I didn't win, as now I'm showing no record of that in my gmail...so I've bid on another one of the hardbacks (either again, or for the first time) today.
i have decided after the fact that instead of abandoning the english language, i was actually using it to say the phrases "is done with his evening walk" and "footsore", except that i MASSIVELY mis-spelled each phrase :^)
WEll I had made some anime slideshows on my Windows movie maker using music that I had already purchased from Cd's. But Then it said on youtube that I was breaking copyright laws because I was using unathorized music, and they had muted my videos.
I am, in fact. There's a man by the name of Jack Diamonds (whom I originally found on Py Kim's videos, author of "Sex Secrets of an American Geisha"), and I suppose you can call him an unofficial pickup artist. He is extremely thorough at understanding women. We wrote a few letters back and forth several years ago as I playfully questioned what it was like to be a "male whore". :) To my surprise (and delight), he did try some "techniques" on me, via letter (without knowing where I knew him from). I recently discovered the private blogs he shared with me to be missing from his archives, along with an original video on "The Approach" (approaching and initiating conversation with a woman of choice, whom one hasn't yet met). He may be writing his own book on the subject. I'll have to write him again. You might have deduced that that's not his birth name, but since he chose it and uses it (like I've made my married last name legal) I think of it legitimately. He's one of many I like studying the behavior and mindframe of. He (and I, I suppose) see making individual women feel special simultaneously without the others feeling jealous (a general sense of love) as understanding humanity. He's good at creating polyamorous group relationships, and I find that quite interesting, albeit unorthodox to most tacit expectations of society. Here are some of his photos.
Sweet! Thank you for the recommendation. I will see what I can do in renting The Pickup Artist later! (And add it to my list of things to review.).
i shall have to keep an iron fist (like the Iron Chancellor of germany) and clamp down, forcing myself to 30 minutes or less of experimenting on each online-presentful arena. Uranus and Saturn will align. i will eat smoked cheese and apricots. and just to make sure that i can pull it off, i will plant artichokes in my nonexistent garden
Aaww, I'm sorry :[ So how have you beeen my mom and I have missed you guys! Were excited about Thanksgiving! So are you gonna help make the pies this year? :]
lol thanks for the correction, my edumacation has been boosted up now! :D And thats cool that you read them, usually I don't post bullitens because I think that nobody really reads them.
