SUZUKI SMITH: AMBER ALERT
Raw punk rock from Boston with in-your-face driving guitars and moshpit worthy anthems.
March 2007.
SUZUKI SMITH bio and AMBER ALERT press release:
“Suzuki Smith brings me back to the days where punk was socially conscious but could still rock your face. Suzuki Smith serves up in your face street punk filled with driving guitars and moshpit worthy anthems. I’m reminded of Murphy’s Law or the Dropkick Murphy’s without the Irish sound.”
“Ska, Punk and Other Junk” magazine
Suzuki Smith began as a one man band in 2001 as singer/songwriter and bassist Jay Dodd put together songs like “Jen Lindley Fan Club,” “Drive On” and “Resistance” (among others). Upon the realization that he might have something worthwhile on his hands, he set out to recruit the remaining pieces of the puzzle that would make up the newly formed 3-piece punk band known as Suzuki Smith.
Since 2002, Suzuki Smith has spent a lot of time writing songs and paying its dues locally in the Greater Boston area and on the road by playing as many shows as they can get their punk rock hands on. Through all that, they have always remembered two things: keep it simple and never take yourself too seriously. Holding fast to those two ideas is what has brought Suzuki Smith to where it is today as a valued member of the North Eastern U.S. punk scene.
After several demos and comps, AMBER ALERT is their first full-length release and is the end result of years of hard work, sweating, laughing, traveling, eating, drinking beer, farting (because of the beer), fighting (because of the farting), making new friends wherever they go, some disappointment, and not understanding what the word “no” means.
Many of the songs on AMBER ALERT are funny if you pay attention to the lyrics that are being spit out at you. But it’s hard to do when all you want to do is rock out to the driving beat and the reckless driving guitars. Even though some songs are comedic in nature, they have a moral and biting sense of truth to them all. Topics include: drinking too much and pissing your life away (“Kamikaze Irishmen”); cross-cultural differences and the merits of American women (“Hindu In America”); telling the world you are a total retard (“Shred Of Reason”); leaving your friend’s house when he wants to get laid (Get Out! Get Out! [Jonny’s Song]”); what wives did to drunk wife-beating husbands in the 1940’s (“Wife Beater”) and; keeping your kids out of harm’s way while camping (“IMac Had A Taintbug”).
Conversely, many of the songs have a very serious approach from detailing the difficulties of being in a punk rock band (“Punk Band”) to wanting to kick the yuppies out of your town (“Defend Somerville”) to telling loved ones they will never be forgotten (“I Will”).
All three members of Suzuki Smith reside in the Boston Metro area but have come from other places with their own distinctive styles. John Voulgaris (guitar and backing vocals) is a pure metal guitarist by style and will not hesitate to shred like his balls are on fire. Cliff Van Etten (drums and backing vocals) is about as pure of a punk drummer as there is with his quirky NoFx style and outrageous speed. Jay Dodd (lead vocals and bass) is a disciple of the Mike Ness (of Social Distortion) school of punk rock. Play 3 Chords, go crazy and rock steady and hard.
While everyone has their own particular style, the band is held together by open-mindedness and the ability to blend all 3 styles into one sound that is pure raw punk rock from Boston. With their relentless DIY work ethic, they pour out non radio-friendly punk songs that will rock you to your core and leave you nodding your head up and down while you skank the night away.
Enjoy the songs we have up here on MySpace. They are FREE to download at will. So, turn up the volume and piss off your lame hip-hop lovin' neighbors. That's just punks being punks.
