Songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Suzy Connolly is a musical powerhouse who tells it like it is. Formerly the principal songwriter for Sydney-based duo Butterfly 9, Suzy is now going it alone and soon to release her debut solo album packed full of indie pop gems. It’s music that ranges from urgent to soothing, always immediate in establishing Suzy’s trademark honesty, drama and tenderness. The duo of Suzy Connolly and Matt Fell achieved much as Butterfly 9. With their signature 60’s-inspired classic pop writing, beautiful vocals and sparkling production, B9 released two refreshingly direct albums (self-titled and one for the birds on ABC/Universal and Craving Records). The pair signed with Mushroom Music Publishing worldwide, achieved widespread Australian radio-play on NOVA and ABC Radio, featured in a string of local and international hit TV shows (‘Summerland’, ‘Home and Away’, and ‘Blue Water High’) and were hand-picked by the Counting Crows as support for an Australian national tour. And according to a MusicMax listener poll, “Another Perfect Day” from B9’s first album is no less than the 37th best summer song of all time! Suzy in 2010, new album and a new beginning As of mid-2010, Suzy Connolly has written a whole stack of new material, and teamed up with talented up and coming producer and session musician Josh Schuberth (Josh Pyke, Ben Folds). With half a solo album recorded and the rest scheduled for completion by year end, a fresh and exciting new chapter is about to begin. Suzy’s new record is a guitar pop lover’s album with plenty of emotional toughness, lyrical insights and soaring melodic vocal hooks. Some songs reflect Suzy’s recent turbulent times and this is one artist that wouldn’t have it any other way. References include Suzy’s classic pop influences such as Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, Aimee Mann and Blondie. The inspiration behind the music Suzy comes from a large and creative family of painters, musicians, producers and writers. Her songwriting father, Richard, even wrote the Play School theme – “There’s A Bear In There”! As a teenager Suzy performed regularly as a jazz vocalist, but struggled with the shyness of youth, yet to find her own voice. Much like two of her heroes, Ray Davies (The Kinks) and Andy Partridge (XTC), who also overcame introversion, Suzy ironically found a way forward by satisfying an urgent desire to write songs and express herself musically and artistically. Luckily for us, she hasn’t looked back since. Suzy’s musical influences sit firmly in the retro pop or classic, power pop field. She counts herself as a big fan of some great bands and writers: The Kinks, The Beatles, The Who, Sam Cooke, Teenage Fanclub, Blondie, Aimee Mann, Elliot Smith, Brian Wilson, Paul Weller, Ray LaMontagne, Ryan Adams – you get the picture.
