Svartsot started in early 2005 in Randers, Denmark. From the inception, the intention has been to merge metal and Scandinavian folk music with stories from the wealth of Danish folklore and cultural history as well as of Nordic mythology. The basic ingredients are the “standard” metal arrangement of two guitars, bass, drums and growled vocals and added to this are the more folk music orientated elements of acoustic instruments – whistles, mandolin, accordion, and the like.
In the time that has passed since the beginning, the band has released two demos (Svundne Tider - 2005 and Tvende Ravne - 2006) and a full length album (Ravnenes Saga - 2007/Napalm Records). Svartsot has also received recognition as a live band, performing concerts across Denmark and Europe. Shows include several festivals, such as Winter Masers of Rock 2007 (Czech Republic), Ragnarök 5 (Germany), Fiesta Pagana 2008 (Switzerland) and Aalborg Metal Festival 2008 (Denmark). In 2008 Svartsot toured with Týr, Hollenthon, Alestorm and Gwydion on the Ragnarök Aaskereia tour. Also, in November of 2008, the band had the honour of playing at the Danish Metal Awards 2008 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The band has undergone various line-up changes in it's history; the last one being shortly before the end of 2008, where all members bar two left due to differences in opinion on how the band was to continue. Already after two months, replacements for the departed members had been found, and work could continue on new material for a follow up album to the debut album Ravnenes Saga. This album will hopefully be recorded in the autumn of 2009...
