So what really can be said about the store "Swag Records" that hasn't been said before, DJ Sneak on a recent visit was heard to proclaim " at last, a real record shop".
Brimming at the seams literally, these 3 floors house music, scuse the pun. The shelves at the back of the shop holding back catalogue deleted US 12" are now concave from the years of abuse. To the wonder of many a customer, its a talking point and has been photographed for many a DJ on a PR stunt. No leather sofas here or areas to hang out and look cool, this is a working shop, internet orders bubbling over in the back of the shop to far and wide. Vinyl junkies looking for that rare or just released promo.
Situated in the Bronx of Croydon, aka West Croydon.
Excellent public transport facilities on tap, tram stop, bus station and train station all within spitting distance. Swag has tempted people from far and wide, all been given the Swag service, from tea, biscuits to a guest list to London Clubs, and of course a wealth of records that really one should come with time and energy to plough through it all, a knowledgable staff in the forms of Paul "Homer" Stubbs, Manageress Liz Edwards, plus Richie Littler who helps out thursday & friday.
Dave Mothersole, Grant Dell, Richard Grey & Terry Francis (Fabric resident) have also put time in behind the counter at different points over the 14 years and still get their vinyl fix from Swag, and are great ambassadors for the shop on their trips overseas.
Visitors make their pilgramage and are never disapointed, especially when they realise it is only 20 minutes from Victoria, plus the local legends Colin Dale & Grooverider to name a few all feel a need to shop there, also Nathan Coles, Mr C, Eddie Richards, Gideon Jackson, Raymondo Rodriguez are regular visitors.
There is an excellent, mail order service which is quicker than most fast food chains.
Liz also hosts the underground house night Kerfuffle, which is now in it's 10th year, also "The Funny Farm" with Nathan Coles, which have have had 3 very successful nights so far, and the next one will be in the summer, plus not forgetting the legendary Swag Xmas Parties.
An open mind and a friendly vibe is what one gets from Swag Records, which is why it has proved to be still as popular as ever whatever your bag,House,Jackin House,US/UK Funky House,Minimal,Techno,Dubstep,Drum and Bass, Electro, Soul,Funk,Broken Beat,Bassline,Old School Garage, and Club Classics. > > Plus a wide selection of Cds, Tapepacks & Merchandise.
Above the shop there is an excellent recording studio and an office from where runs the Swag, Pirate Radio, Funknose, LHB labels which are now available on the website as MP3 format and some vinyl too. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 11am to 7pm (late night thursdays).
