The team was named the seventh member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League in November, 1997. The Keene Swamp Bats are a non-profit organization.
One of the decisive factors the NECBL board of directors cited when they unanimously voted to grant the franchise was the tremendous support the team received from the city of Keene.

Keene Swampbats Excited for summer! Posted at 10:59 PM Jan 14 view more
The Swamp Bat is a mystical creature. According to legend it lives in the shadows of a
small pond in Keene, N.H., known as Wilson or Bent Pond. And, the story goes, this
winged creature comes out only on nights when the lights of Alumni Field are turned on.
But that's just a tall tale. Or is it?
The Keene Swamp Bats - the baseball kind, that is - are not a figment of the
imagination. This summer they will continue the proud tradition of baseball in Keene as a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
