Announcing the First International Support Women Artists Now Day!
SWAN Day (Support Women Artists Now Day) is a new international holiday that celebrates women artists. It will be an annual event taking place on the last Saturday of Women's History Month (March). The first SWAN Day will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2008.
As a symbol of international solidarity, there will be events all over the world featuring women artists on SWAN Day. The public will be encouraged to attend these events and to make donations to their favorite women artists.
By focusing attention on the work of women artists, SWAN Day will help people imagine what the world might be like if women's art and perspectives were fully integrated into all of our lives. The long term goal of SWAN Day is to inspire communities around the world to find new ways to recognize and support women artists as a basic element of civic planning.

YAY!!!! HERE'S SOME NOISE WE ARE MAKING!!
WE GET THE FIRST MENTION IN THE LETTER FROM S.W.A.N HEAD QUARTERS!!
SWAN Day Is Catching On -
In the U.S. & 8 Other Countries!
We are happy to report that as of March 12, there are 117 SWAN Day events posted on our official SWAN Day Map.
There are events from coast to coast in the U.S. and in 8 other countries. They range from a festival of women-fronted rock bands
in New London, Connecticut to a performance of "Tales from the Far Side of Fifty" by women aged 56 - 84 in Oceanside, California.
All-day festivals are being planned in Washington, D.C.; Cranston,
Rhode Island; San Diego, California; and Las Vegas, Nevada.
In Bisbee, Arizona women artists are placing a SWAN Day banner
across the town's main street and raising money to send a young
woman to arts school. In Dorchester, Massachusetts, workshops
are being held at a recycling center on using leather and vinyl scraps
to create purses and tote bags. Multi-day SWAN festivals are being
created outside of the U.S. in Germany, Canada, Bosnia &
Herzegovina, and Ghana. (See the list of international events at events.womenarts.org/swan/events/international.)
All of this activity is showing the tremendous energy and diversity
of women artists around the world. The organizers of SWAN Day
Berlin wrote to us that they originally thought they would be
hosting a small event with local artists, but when they published
their call for submissions, more than 80 artists from 18 different
countries applied! We are impressed and excited every time we
check the new event listings and see what great work all of you
are doing.
Also, many of you are telling us that SWAN Day is providing new fundraising opportunities. Several people have written that they
obtained funds using the sample proposal in the Fundraising Tools
section of our website. We were delighted when Jodi Schiller
of San Francisco's Drama Mamas called to say that she feels
more confident about asking for money because her new play
workshop is part of an international celebration.
We truly believe that if we work together over time, we can create
a SWAN movement that will help all of us be more successful.
Abdulai Danaah, one of the organizers of SWAN Day Ghana, put it
best when he wrote recently, "You care for us, you have seen us
as one, and we have great confidence." We hope that everyone participating in SWAN Day can feel the confidence that grows
from our mutual caring and solidarity.
Our friends at Movies by Women have been doing a great series of audio and video podcasts on issues related to women in film, and they recently devoted a half-hour to SWAN Day. Our Executive Director Martha Richards was interviewed by Tara Veneruso, the founder of Movies By Women; Stephanie Young, President of the Alliance of Women Directors; and writers Heidi Martinuzzi and Lucy Rodriguez-Watson. You can listen to the podcast by visiting their website at MoviesbyWomen.com or by searching for Movies By Women on iTunes. (Look for their Audio Podcast 9.)
Martha Richards Is Featured in New Book
Our Founder and Executive Director, Martha Richards, is one of the subjects of Ann Hallstein's latest book, "Uncommon Gifts." The book looks at the lives of seven people who have shaped their work around gifts such as patience, intensity, resourcefulness, and vision. Based on interviews with each, Hallstein examines what helped them, what hindered them, what sacrifices they have made, and what they hope to contribute to the greater good. "Uncommon Gifts" is available from East Branch Press (www.eastbranchpress.com). Hallstein is a proud member of the WomenArts Network, and you can read her profile at www.womenarts.org/network/profile_1659.html
Thanks so much to all of you who are working on SWAN Day events. It is wonderful to learn about your excellent work.
Best Wishes,
Martha Richards, Executive Director
