Our interests range from Musketeers to Pirates, Knights, and all such like Swashbucklers. But also in Book Writing, Reading, Watching Movie Classics (of course, Swashbuckling Classics; but others also). Ted also studies, and has studied, History extensively for nearly twenty years in different types of fields; but his specialty has been European and Biblical History, of which (both fields) he has kept up with quiet a bit, and of which he shares the learnings within the Swashbuckling Press website.
Don't forget to visit our SWASH-STORE to see what great treasure you can find!!!!
Movies
Adventure and comedy movies are our main line-up of favorites, but that can include many different genres.
These genres, of course, include Swashbuckling, which can be anything from Robin Hood to Mutiny on the Bounty (make no mistake, we have seen hundreds of swashbucklers!! and we love the whole theme).
Here is a lineup of some of the BEST we have seen - these movies DEFINE the best in Swashbuckling (to learn more about these and other great swashbucklers, CLICK HERE, or you can simply click on any of the following pictures:
THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1948) with Gene Kelly (d'Artagnan), Van Heflin (Athos), Gig Young (Porthos), Robert Coote (Aramis), Lana Turner (Milady de Winter), and Vincent Price (Cardinal de Richelieu). Based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas. One of the BEST Swashbucklers ever!!
THE ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN with Errol Flynn and Alan Hale, Sr. The Spanish nobleman from the 1500's who was a great lady's man; based heavily upon Errol Flynn's real life!!
SCARAMOUCHE with Stewart Granger and Mel Ferrer; based on Rafael Sabatini's fantastic novel, and having the longest duel scene in Swashbuckling history - don't miss it!!
THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD with Errol Flynn, and Basil Rathbone. Based upon Robin Hood legends.
THE BLACK SWAN starring Tyrone Power, George Sanders and Maureen O'Hara. Perhaps the best Pirate movie we have ever seen!! Based, again, upon the wonderful novel of Rafael Sabatini.
THE SEA HAWK with Errol Flynn. Which was based "loosly" on Sabatini's novel, unlike the silent movie that played about twenty years before, which was more accurate to the book.
THE COURT JESTER with Danny Kaye. One of the BEST EVER comedy Swashbucklers!! All Swashbuckling and comedy fans has to see this one!! (The pellet with the poison is in the chalice from the palace; the vessel with the pessel has the brew that is true!!)
THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE with Errol Flynn. Based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. We find an older Flynn doing an excellent swashbuckling job even in his older years!!
And who can forget about THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE with Bob Hope - the only comedy swashbuckler we found that gives Danny Kaye a run for his Swashbuckling money!! Bob is wacky as Sylvester Crosby (yes, that's the last name that was given to him, even though he felt he was a little thin for the part!!), the man of seven face, who is a traveling actor who runs into pirates!! You have to see this one - it's a riot!!
IVANHOE with Robert Taylor and George Sanders truly defines the Knighthood movie for us; beautifully shot, and hard to beat!!
Also Biblical epics, such as:
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS with Charlton Heston. The Cecil B. DeMille epic, based upon the book of Exodus in the Holy Scriptures, also based upon the writings of Josephus, a Jewish Pharisee, who was writing in about 100 A.D. (who gave us a war-like Moses in Africa), and also based upon the writings of Philo, another Jewish writer in early Christianity, who may have even personally interviewed the Apostle Peter!!
BEN HUR with Charlton Heston is the biblical epic found in early Christianity. Don't miss the chariot races!!
Newer Movies that we really like are:
Gladiator, with Russell Crowe.
Lord of the Ring series
We even like movies, believe it or not, that are not even Swashbucklers!!!! Movies like the Die Hard series with Bruce Willis; The Star Trek Movies (including the TV series - all of them, except for the newest one: Enterprise, we did'nt care for.
For our complete listings of movies, books, Weapons and Period Clothing, don't forget to visit our Swashbuckling Store!
Television
Not too much keen on modern T.V., but we do like some older TV shows, such as Three's Company. And we are crazy for Third Rock from the Sun, and, oh yes, the Star Trek Television Series, except for "Enterprise."
Books
Our interests range from such Swashbuckling classics by Alexandre Dumas, Rafael Sabatini, Paul Feval, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Booth Tarkington, Harold MacGrath, Frank G. Slaughter, and Howard Pyle.
Heroes
Jesus; D'Artagnan; Adino, of David's Mighty Three, who lifted his spear against 800; and Joe Ted Roberts, who had been given a fantastic gift that not too many knew about, but was seen by those who knew him.
THIS MYSPACE PAGE WAS PUT UP TO SHOWCASE THE SWASHBUCKLING PRESS WEBSITE - an adventure that elevates history to its proper pitch!!
AND JUST WHAT IS SWASHBUCKLING????
WELL, FRIENDS, DO YOU LIKE ADVENTURE? DO YOU LIKE HISTORY? MORE IMPORTANTLY, DO YOU LIKE ADVENTUROUS HISTORY?
We have a world of Swashbuckling awaiting the anxious adventurer!!
We cover such subjects as:
PIRATES,
ROBIN HOOD,
THE THREE MUSKETEERS,
D'ARTAGNAN,
KNIGHTS IN ARMOUR,
THE HISTORY OF SWASHBUCKLING,
AND MUCH, MUCH MORE . . . .
ALSO WE HAVE A GREAT SWASHBUCKLING STORE THAT YOU CAN VISIT
WHERE YOU WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO PURCHASE THAT
SWASHBUCKING-HISTORICAL MOVIE THAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN THAT YOU NEEDED FOR YOUR COLLECTION, PERIOD CLOTHING, SWASH-JEWELRY WORTHY OF A SWASH-INDIVIDUAL, CANDLES FOR THE SWASH-LIGHT LOVER WITHIN, BOOKS FOR THE SWASH-READER, WEAPONS & ARMOUR FOR THE SWASH-COLLECTOR, AND EVEN SWASH-TOYS FOR THAT ADVENTURER IN ALL OF US!!!!
AGAIN, WHAT IS SWASHBUCKLING REALLY ALL ABOUT?
When we think of Swashbuckling, we sometimes only image Pirates - which there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!!! However, the world of Swashbuckling is much bigger; and we explore the vast possibilities on our website.
Swashbuckling takes us from the most ancient of times, until we see them in our modern films; It takes us from the clashing of rapiers, to the beautiful south seas; it takes us from the court of Henry the eighth, to the films of Douglas Fairbanks Sr.; it takes us from the Mighty Men of Valour of King David's time, to the desparate pursuit of Braveheart's Sir William Wallace; it takes us from the forest of Sherwood of Robin Hood fame, to the seafaring voyages of Christopher Columbus ... it is History as it should be - Adventurous History, the only way History should be told!!
Forget about the boring History you learned about in grade school, we are speaking of brave Musketeers with their drawn swords, ready to take on the Cardinal's guards; we are speaking of Fletcher Christian, as he is about to Mutiny on the Bounty against Captain Bligh in the Southern Seas; we are speaking about mighty galleons in Queen Elizabeth's reign, under the command of Sir Francis Drake, ready to take on the Spanish Armada; we are speaking about King Richard I, rushing back from his imprisonment to reclaim his throne from his evil brother Prince John; we are speaking about Adino, of King David's Mighty Three, who rose his spear against an army of 800 alone, only to be the cheif of his friends; we are talking of Alexander the Great, just before he decided to conquor the world; we are thinking of Errol Flynn, as he first weilded a sword to the world in Captain Blood, causing a sensation that lasts until today; we are pronouncing loudly about Sir Henry Morgan, who, with the help of Jamie Waring (Jamie Boy), his right hand man, took on the dreaded Pirate Captain Leach, in an effort to sweep the seas of Privateers for his Majesty Charles I of England ... we are speaking of many adventurous things, indeed!!!
Don't miss any of it!!!!
