"Swaying Buildings effortlessly blend the best bits of indie rock from the 1980s to today and produce a sound that hints at a dozen exceptional bands while maintaining their originality. That's talent, folks. The trio give the impression of seasoned musicians, particularly the dynamic between guitarist Marco and drummer Rocco Ilinic. We're engaged by an assortment of tight compositions that encourage reflection on master songwriters past and present: Kilbey, Atkinson, Kuepper, et al. Thrilling and memorable."
Live review by ANDREW MCMILLEN - RAVE MAGAZINE
Hailing from Brisbane's southside, the Queensland capital, Australian band Swaying Buildings paint a ringing melodic sound that blends together folk, pop and rock. In 2006 the band self-recorded and released its debut album Something In My Shoes on its label Hum & Buzz Records. The album was bravely visionary, rich in reverb, its wall of sound softened by synthesizers, filtered vocals and dreamy chords. The release caught the attention of several promoters in the United States and the band went on to complete a tour of Los Angeles, taking in famed venues such as the Whiskey A Go Go, as well as featuring at the International Pop Overthrow Festival. 2007/08 saw Swaying Buildings further promote their debut album through continued shows including a slot on Brisbane's famed Valley Fiesta. In 2009 the band released the melancholic folk-tinged digital EP The Volume Of Cars And Noise while currently recording their sophomore album due end of year.
SWAYING BUILDINGS - Something In My Shoes (Hum & Buzz)
AAA BNE DIY LO-FI. Savvy?
Local Brisbane boys Swaying Buildings play a lush blend of folk, pop and rock. The album is full of crunchy, reverberated guitars, filtered vocals and soft walls of synthesisers. Short break-down tracks like Snowdome create a rich 'album' feel, with pulsating beats and cool samples. Say Anything is a neat three-and-a-half minutes of snap, crackle and pop with dreamy vocals, a straight cymbal-orientated drum beat and simple guitar hooks. The recording is purposefully lo-fi, garnering it a genuine indie sound, which works in parts but not in others. For while DIY has its merits, there are songs in which the over-enthusiastic use of overdrive and reverb inhibit, rather than encourage the sound. Simply because something is intentional does not make it good, or free from critique. This is a lovely little album though: poppy, indie, experimental and local. Well worth checking out.
Was a pleasure guys! Really great to meet you and to see your awesome live show. Magic night. Look forward to playing a whole lot more gigs with you in the future. Might be a while before we get back up to Brisbane again though. Let us know if you have any plans to come down to Melbourne. Will be in touch if you are interested in any tours when I have more info. Be good
