Is the Filipino culture organization at Southwestern College. Filipino or not, everyone is welcomed and encouraged to join and participate in our events.
If you are interested in joining you can start by attending our general body meetings held every Tuesday at 11:00-11:50am in room 566. If you can't make the meetings, always keep an eye out for posters advertising events on campus and bulletins reminding you not to miss out! Or you could also come by the cubical 12 and meet and hangout with those there. Just don't forget to bring a SMILE!
Pagkakaisa was founded in 1968 by students in search of political and cultural awareness. These students, few in number, knew that their strength was to be found within each other. They named their organization, "Pagkakaisa," meaning "Strength in Unity." The organization became a voice for the students and the Filipino community, as Pagkakaisa remains so today. Now, thirty-eight years later, we are striving to keep the goals and objectives established by those founders in 1968. In unity, we can accomplish these goals and lead for another thirty years.
Please don't hesitate to ask questions or make suggestions! Email Us:pagkakaisa1968@yahoo.com

In order to escape lives of poverty and support their families, these women married men they didn't know. Upon arriving in Canada, they found themselves isolated in remote regions of the country. One woman arrived in a small town in the dead of winter to find herself living in a camper with no running water. She soon discovered that her husband was a violent man.

Just a little info about the campaign:
THE PURPLE ROSE CAMPAIGN Against Trafficking of Filipino Women and Children
WHY CAMPAIGN AGAINST TRAFFICKING OF FILIPINO WOMEN AND CHILDREN
**An estimated 20 million people, 90% women and children, are in the global sex trade
**The Philippines is the world's top exporter of women. In 2005, 750,000 women were exported to over 203 countries. 30% of the women being exported from the Philippines end up in the sex trade.
**While both Filipinos and Filipinas work overseas, the women stay abroad longer as their job contracts are more open-ended and their work continuing.
**Roughly 60% of Filipinas who leave for overseas become domestic labor--cleaning, cooking, taking care of the children of families who can afford servants.
**The second largest most probable work for Filipinas who go abroad is in the sex trade.
**More than half-million Filipina adults and children are in the sex trade in the Philippines, catering to tourists, American GIs on R & R, and local males.
**One-hundred fifty-thousand (150,000) Filipinas work in brothel houses, strip joints, bars and nightclubs in Japan, under the control of the Yakuza. When this practice started, the women were sold at $2,400-$8,000--an amount the women have to pay back to the owner.
The Philippine government does little or nothing about these facts because part of the annual $8 billion remitted
