Marcy Brown, lead vocalist for the Sweaty Betty Blues Band performed for 15 years in the tri-state area with Pittsburgh's renowned Jack Purcell Orchestra, a 12-piece Big Band, singing jazz standards. She has sung the National Anthem for the Pittsburgh Pirates five times, and performed with several wedding bands and rock bands before forming Sweaty Betty Blues Band with her husband, Bill Brown. .......................................................................... Bill has performed as drummer and vocalist for over 30 years in many rock bands in the Butler and Kittanning areas, as well as many well-worn taverns as far south as Romney, West Virginia. He has since mastered the blues shuffle and adds a terrific dynamic to slow blues, driving the rhythm section through many varied tempos. .................................................................................
Bringing a wealth of education and experience to our band, Lead guitar player and vocalist, Max Schang has been playing the guitar since age 8 and has been performing since age 16. He studied classical guitar under Dick Lurie in Cleveland, OH and took Master classes with Jose Luis Rodrigo in Spain in 1973. He participated in seminars with Howard Roberts, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis and Pat Martino. Following all that lovely education, Max promptly founded the popular Jazz/Rock group 'Crown Vetch' with George Grexa in '74, and played with the the rock group 'Blue Ash' in 1976. He was a veteran of countless gigs as leader or sideman with various musicians, is a life-long student of music, and teacher of many fine students over a 30-year period.
Max released his critically acclaimed 'Blue Max' CD in 1998, receiving extremely favorable reviews in Blues Review Magazine. He performed as a member of the Erin Burkett Group in Pittsburgh, and was a blues band booking agent and promoter from 1990 - 2000. Max has jammed with many well-known blues artists including Jimmy Thackery, Kenny Neal, Greg Piccolo and Chris Cain, and is a part-time guitarist for the E.G. Kight band and the Billy Price Band. He performed on two European tours with Eddie Shaw and the Wolf Gang. He has performed in five Chicago Blues Festivals, including three on the main stage with Eddie Shaw. Max has also done studio work with singer/songwriter BJ O'Malley on her last three CDs. He is currently finishing his Gypsy Jazz-style CD and is seeking players to augment the project (rhythm guitar and violin). ....................................................................................................
Our illustrious keyboard player, John DeCola, hails from Slippery Rock, Pa. John is a seasoned musician who has been performing lately with several local bands including a country rock band, and has performed at the Carnegie Blues Festival. John adds tremendous expression, rhythm and harmony to the band's sound and helps to open several great new musical opportunities. ..........................................................................................
We welcome to our permanent lineup, Jim Spears, from Butler, Pa. Jim studied music in L.A. at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood, California. He has performed with many great local, regional and nationally recognized musicians including Leslie Gore, B.E.Taylor, Little Anthony & The Imperials, The Platters, Sputzy & The Soul Providers, Tommy Roe, Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers, 8th Street Rox, and many others. He currently performs with R&B favorites, Vanilla Soul Revue, Soul Patrol, and his jazz group, Uptown Combo. We’re honored to have Jim with us. He has subbed for us several times and adds tremendous joy and enthusiasm to the shuffles and other blues tempos, not to mention fantastic chops! .........................................................................................................................................
Sweaty Betty performed at the Pirate's PNC Park at the Montecristo Club, as well as the Pittsburgh Blues Festival at Hartwood Acres, the Carnegie Blues Festival, and the Indiana Music and Arts festival. They also perform for several charity organizations including the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank, Special Olympics in Allegheny and Lawrence Counties, and events for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research. Marcy Brown was instrumental in organizing the first and second annual BYE WEEK BLUES festivals for the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank at Moondog's in October of 2006 and 2007. The charity event for The Food Bank at Moondog's for 2008 will be on Sunday, November 23 - no Steeler game that day!
Lindy Hop dancers regularly include Sweaty Betty in their late-night dance events. The band's bluesy, jazzy, swinging style is perfect for jitterbugging into the wee hours.
SB3 plans to record at the Mud Hut Studio in Sharon, Pa shortly.
The band most recently performed for the third time at the Pittsburgh Blues Festival at Hartwood Acres on July 25, 2008. It was the most well-attended Friday night show that the festival has had yet. Sweaty Betty Band opened for their friends, Cleveland’s Blue Lunch, as well as Louisiana’s Zydeco Travelers and Tab Benoit.
They travel to Erie regularly to perform at the Avalon Hotel, and performed at Mt. Pleasant’s Greendance Winery, and Mastropietro Winery in Berlin Center, Ohio. Sweaty Betty also performed at the first Steeler Pre Season game at Heinz Field on August 13 for the rematch vs. Arizona.
