The Roots of Sweetcane
Sweetcane music is a style coined by Chicago born singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & producer Marko Pankovich. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The name Sweetcane came whispered in a dream long before any real significance was attached to it. It wasn’t until after extensive playing as a guitarist in the Boston & NYC African music scenes, with such acts as Senegalese master drummer Ibrahima’s World Beat, Haitian Racine groups Lataye, Batwel Rada & Tjovi Ginen, Zairian Soucous with Kolo’m Boka, Ska & Reggae with The Pearls, Nigerian afrobeat w/ Afrosoul messengers as well as Cuban Son w/ Jose Conde y Ola Fresca, that the name Sweetcane began to have meaning. After all, 80% of the slave trade was created to mill the sugar cane! These roots rhythms are the inspiration for Sweetcane though, as with all art, it is an ever evolving process. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For promoters looking for a couple descriptive words to sum up the essence of Sweetcane music: beautiful songs, sexy rhythms. Or, if you would like a term to quickly classify the jazzy blend of R&B, Soul, and funky pan Afro-Caribbean styles encountered here try: Afrosoul -------------------------------------------------------------------------
