When asked who she aspires to sound like, Sweeteverafter lead singer Amy Pearl says, "Myself." While their music can be likened to that of Tool or Soundgarden, Amy, who together with lead guitarist Jay Huzil, started the band, prefers to stand alone in the music world. And with her sweet soprano slipping over hard to reach places then suddenly verging into rage-mode, she certainly does.
Described as a 'musical Molotov,' and 'Jefferson Airplane with a stomach-ache' the California-based band mixes heavy-edged rock with an acoustic aftertaste. Bass player John Salcido underlines the album with deep riffs while drummer Mike Martinez charges each track with energy and heat.
Amy wants her songs to dig straight into the essence of humanity. Death-related lyrics are woven throughout the debut, generating thoughts of the after-life. In "Unwanted Man," Amy rages to stellar electric drive: "... shake off the dirt of an unwanted man… we weren't meant to die, we've got to be a fire, inside we try to hide, but we weren't meant to die, we've got to keep the fire. "
"Dead Flowers" cries out for an existence beyond the natural: "You ask, why do we exist here?... There's a place I go, I can run and hide, strong arms open wide, someone's on our side. "
In addition, there's the challenge of the title track: "Do we really know what the darkness means, to have and to hold, a never-ending scream, so hard on the outside, trying to gratify, crawling under my skin, they want to get in, I die to keep myself alive."
With sounds that rip at the heart and lyrics which rage long into the night, 'My Death' will no doubt bring hard-rock lovers back to life.
