Born Alexis Nicole Alexander to a single mother pursuing a bachelors degree from Purdue University, Alexis was raised by grandparents for the first five years. As the only child, Alexis spent a great deal of time entertaining herself. However, it was her grandfather who helped cultivated her passion for the arts through his love for photography. He photographed her regularly, collecting many pictures of her. It was because of her grandfather’s passion of photography that developed Alexis’ love for the camera. “He would take pictures of everything, frequently, including pictures of me. It didn’t matter if I was eating a bowl of cereal or falling off of my bike, he would take a picture of everything.”
In addition to captivating the camera with her photogenic ways, she also began to charm audiences alike with her dynamic persona. During her vacations from school, her mother enrolled her in numerous programs that challenged her mentally by expanding her artistic abilities. From art school to acting classes, Alexis developed a strong passion for the arts. However, with the help of a 7th grade teacher, Alexis began to develop an excitement for writing. “I hated that class. She was so picky” she recalls. Nonetheless, Alexis does admit to going home and applying what she had learned to her writing. “I would go home and use what she taught me by applying it to what I wanted to write about”. From that moment on, Alexis would write anything and everything from poems to songs; plays and novels.
“It was like I had risen to my calling,” she recalls as she remembers writing for both her high school and college year books. “When I was in high school, I interviewed Idris Bashier, (a former NFL player for the Indianapolis Colts). Then, when I got to college I began to write about the athletes in college.” It was while Alexis attended Purdue University that she realized that journalism was her destiny. “It was something about the communications field that kept calling my name. At first, I wanted to be a publicist; but then I realized that wasn’t it either.” However, before Alexis could really figure out what she wanted to do, she was on MTV’s Total Request Live (TRL) interviewing Grammy Award Winning recording artist Ne-Yo. “Of course, I was nervous. I was on MTV, live, with my face plastered televisions throughout millions of homes and all throughout Times Square!” Finally, she realized what she wanted to do; become an entertainment and news journalist. “I had a really great time. I was contacted several times by MTV to interview more celebrities, like T.I., and to introduce videos.”
Shortly thereafter, Alexis launched Whispering Grapevines Entertainment & News. She also became the voice of a successful online radio show “Late Nights with Lexilex.” This allowed her to create a platform for controversial topics in the African-American community, in addition to featuring up and coming artist on her show. She also maintained a YouTube channel for sketch comedy that reached over 100,000 views and 800 subscribers. Additionally, she was featured on the front page of AllHipHop.com for her controversial editorials.
In spite of her success thus far, Alexis is still working hard to establish herself as a well-respected journalist. “Sometimes, it gets really hard because I’m a nice looking female. I have to work twice as hard to demand the respect I deserve.” Still, she refuses to give up her dream. Although Alexis has had a great amount of success thus far, she is still thriving on fulfilling her dreams. “Everyone has a story and a dream. This is my story, and this is my dream,” she says with a smile on her face. “I’m going to make it happen.”
It is without a shadow of a doubt that Alexis will be the #1 “Who’s Who” of all internet media worldwide as she continues to evolve creatively. It is only a matter of time before the world discovers that she is definitely a force to be reckoned with and a voice to listen to.
