Sweethearts of the Rodeo happens the first Wednesday of every month at Molly Malone’s in LA, and over the past 5 years has forged a sense of community out of the LA country rock scene. The show is 90% cover versions of songs we all grew up with – from the classic outlaw country of Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash to Gram Parsons & The Rolling Stones. There are no rehearsals...leaving plenty of room for magic and spontaneity (along with the occasional train wreck but hey: that’s half the fun!) We call it a “nocase” as opposed to a “showcase.” It’s also host to local unsigned talent as well as national acts, and everyone gets the same raw treatment. Special guests have included Lucinda Williams, Kasey Chambers, Jim Lauderdale, Albert Lee, Blasters drummer Bill Bateman, Rosie Flores, James Intveld, Jessi Colter, Nadine, eastmountainsouth, Waylon Payne, Mike Stinson, Randy Weeks, Shooter Jennings, Shurman, Grey DeLisle and Minibar.
"The home of mosh pits and fake tits has become America’s unlikely twang Arcadia. 'There’s more country music in L.A. now than there is in Nashville,' said Lucinda Williams from the stage at Sweethearts Of The Rodeo, one of a growing number of monthly club nights populated by musicians, scenesters and celebs. But don’t look for Shania and Garth – this is firey, old-school, good country. Line dancers will be shot.” ~ Details Magazine – December 2002
"It’s not easy being country in the city, but more bands are kicking up the dust with their soulful Cali-country sound. It’s a scene that could be playing out almost anywhere in America, with a dirt parking lot outside blown over with tumble-weeks or buzzing with cicadas…and outside the traffic on busy Fairfax Avenue runs past this pub – Molly Malone’s – and its monthly Sweethearts Of The Rodeo country music night." ~ Jessica Hundley – Los Angeles Times Calendar Section - - Cover Story Oct. 2002
