關於我:
Every morning, I wake up in the most unconventionally beautiful, cosmopolitan city with a population of about 2.5million, Manchester. On the table are green tea leaves, PG Tips teabags, soy sauce, mango chutney, Heinz ketchup and Warburton bread – resembling the mish-mash of cultures that we've grown up with in Manchester. My family have been living in Manchester since the 1960s and my grandmother set up one of the first Chinese restaurants here – a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of those who have made Manchester their home. Manchester has everything but the beach and is large enough to be noticed; with the UK's largest university, an international airport with 22 million passengers, a symphony orchestra, a Chinatown, the largest retail area in the UK (including Harvey Nichols and Selfridges) and two premiership football clubs . Perhaps then not surprisingly, Manchester has been dubbed the capital of the North. We are a friendly bunch, unpretentious and not afraid to have a laugh. That is why I love Manchester and am proud of my Mancunian roots.
I want to share with you a snapshot of our life - the videos show a tv show we were on documenting the setting up of Sweet Mandarin Restaurant - which we completed in a staggering four weeks!
Since our creation in 2004 we've gone from strength to strength. Random House has published the story behind the restaurant and titled it Sweet Mandarin.
This year, we are launching the book in the USA with St Martin's Press on 8 July 08 to critical acclaim. Amy Tan, Art Smith (chef to Oprah Winfrey)and the Wall Street Journal have endorsed the book. Barnes and Noble have added it to the Top 8 Great New Writers for the Fall 08. I've been invited to address audiences in LA, Michigan and New York.
I thank God for protecting us and blessing us and it is in Him I trust.
God Bless

About the BookIt was during our weekly shopping trips that my grandmother told me about my family’s history. Of course, I knew some things, like the funny characters and anecdotes that all families share when they get together but never the full detail. The story slipped out in parts as if each bottle or package in the store was tied to a chapter in her life that she wanted to share with us.Spanning a hundred years, this evocative true story tells the story of three generation of exceptional Chinese women. An extraordinary journey that takes us from the brutal poverty of the villages of mainland China, to newly prosperous thirties’ Hong Kong, and over the sea to the UK. Although their lives were played out across different eras and countries, they are as dramatic as the times they lived through. It is food that has pulled each generation through the most devastating upheavals. Helen’s grandmother Lilly Kwok was forced to work as an amah after the violent murder of her soy sauce manufacturing father. She honed her chicken curry recipe as she crossed the ocean from Hong Kong in the 1950s eventually being the first Chinese woman to open one of the earliest Chinese restaurants in Manchester. A restaurant she tragically lost as gambling and Triads tore her family and ruined them financially.Sweet Mandarin shows how the most important inheritance is wisdom, and how family heirlooms can be recipes, passed down through the generations. Helen is the first British Born Chinese author, and this is her first book. Sweet Mandarin is published by Ebury Random House as their lead title on 1st February 2007 in UK, whole of Europe (English language), Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and Hong Kong.
我想認識: I find it fascinating how everyone is connected to another and eventually you end up meeting....especially on MySpace.
