I like to collaborate with other creatives when I make work, whether it's a solo piece or a full production. As my practice is primarily project-based, the number and type of collaborators can vary. I particularly like to work with creatives who challenge within their own practice the concept of theatricality, musicality and photo/videography.
Some of the past and present projects include collaborations with: Performance Poet Ernesto Sarezale, Dance Artists Emile Maurel, Lorraine Smith & Fumi Tomioka, Live Artist Richard Hancock, Sound Designer/Composer Nela Brown, Physical actress/Jazz Singer Chiara de Palo, Visual Artist Maryam Ashemi, Actresses Catherine Guy & Samantha Waddilove and Musician/Percussionist David Naylor.
Influences
The Avant-Garde, Baroque & Enlightenment movements inspired me to explore further some of the current themes I'm tackling through my work. some of their intellectual figures often serve as points of reference, such as Le Marquis de Sade, Choderlos de Laclos, Voltaire, Jean Cocteau, Paul Verlaine & Jean Genet.
My approach to performance-making is influenced by the work and/or the artistic vision of contemporary artists from various creative fields: Madonna, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, The Cinematic Orchestra, Serge Gainsbourg, Salvador Dali, Auguste Renoir, Francis Bacon, Soutine, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Herb Ritts, Guy Bourdin & Max Ophuls.
Sounds Like
A bilingual performance artist who swings easily from English to French to whisper, sing or deliver confessional spoken words about the contradictions between love and sex, identity and ethnicity, religious devotion and submission.
Ladies & Gentlemen, welcome to my alternative artistic lab: Sweet or Sour.
Aiming to go by the name of AlexM - still born and bred Tonny A. - I'm a London-based French performance maker, freelance director, curator and occasional writer.
My practice, both as a solo artist and theatre director, is informed by my professional and academic background: indeed, I studied History & Politics, graduating with a PhD in Diplomatic History and until 2005 I worked as freelance writer and broadcast reporter in Eastern Europe, Belgium and London.
Since then my experience in performing arts has varied: For two years I produced Sweet & Sour a monthly Experimental Cabaret night that featured diverse artists (from musicians to dance artists to filmmakers to performance poets to live artists); I curated The French Re-evolution‘s Variety show (2006), Live poetry shows including Write Stuff (2005) and Diasporic Sounds (2006); as a performance artist, I’ve been making work since 2004, either performing my own writing, conceiving Burlesque and Dance theatre’s solo pieces or collaborating on creative projects with other independent dance and theatre artists including radio drama Exile and Love (Syllabub productions, 2007), Leibniz’s socially-engaged ongoing theatrical project The Book of Blood (2007, 2008).
My directing credits include: Au Creux du Desir (Hackney Empire, 2006), In the Shadows of Senghor (The Space 2006, Brady Arts Centre 2007), River (Baron’s Court 2007).
My work is interdisciplinary, fusing classic poetry with movement and multimedia. Half-way between Physical and Dance theatre, my productions aim to revisit obscure historical eras to celebrate the present while my solo performances, often intuitive and expressive, explore the nature(s) of the relation between physicality and sexual, cultural or sexual identity.
