....old-time music with a modern attitude, Sweet Sunny South delivers with style and gusto.....Bluegrass Unlimited Feb 2006
Sweet Sunny South is an acoustic old-time bluegrass band that plays mostly original music. Based in Paonia, Colorado, the group performs extensively throughout Colorado & The West and has gained a reputation for a lively and entertaining stage show and fine songwriting. At their shows youll find them weaving in and out around a single microphone dressed to a T, reminiscent of a bygone era. They escort the listeners down a windy path of historical journeys, beautiful ballads and rollicking fiddle tunes complete with a healthy dose of humor that keeps folks laughing.
SSS was chosen as an OFFICIAL SHOWCASE BAND of the 2006 IBMA WORLD OF BLUEGRASS CONFERENCE - one of 13 unsigned bands chosen from around the known universe. They have delighted crowds at many fine festivals throughout the Southwest and placed in the prestigious RockyGrass band contest in both 2003 & 2004. They are the 2006 winners of the New Belgium Brewery "What's your Folly" Contest. Bell Creek Dance Club, the groups first CD is a collections of songs and memories of a dance spot popular in their home town during the 30s & 40s. It's a regional favorite and caught the eye of "Bluegrass Now", "Dirty Linen" and other publications. Their second album, Wild-n-Swingin includes producer Mark Nanni sitting in a bit on the Accordian, and even a shout out from the man, Mohammad Ali. Summer 06 brought the release of their first live CD, "Live from the Radio Room" recorded in Grand Junction, CO. The 4th release, "SHOWTIME" was released in 2007 and produced by Aaron Youngberg of Hit & Run with the cover design by Hatch Showprint in Nashville. All of these CDs can be purchased at www.SWEETSUNNYSOUTH.com. Go get em!
Banjo and mandolin player, Bill Powers, writes many of the bands songs. Cory Obert plays a mean old-time fiddle, sometimes with a Cajun flare and sings a solid high tenor. Rob Miller writes tunes, plays the D-28 and sings lead and harmony. Shelley Gray (a.k.a. Laura Ingalls Wilder-n-Swingin) plays the ol kay Bass, sings, hollers, and puts the "Sweet" in Sweet Sunny South.
