But after the War of 1812, the United States was a singular term, not plural. After the War of 1812, there was no longer any doubt that the United States of America would become a force to be reckoned with in North America and in time throughout the world. The war had forged a nation. -1812: The War that Forged a Nation by Walter R. Borneman-

"Liberals want the government to be your mommy. Conservatives want the government to be your daddy. Libertarians want it to treat you like an adult." - Andre Marrou, 1992 Libertarian Presidential candidate

Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys. - P. J. O'Rourke

If you are not free to choose wrongly and irresponsibly, you are not free at all. - Jacob Hornberger

The right to swing my fist ends at the other man's nose. - Oliver Wendell Holmes

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government. - Thomas Jefferson

  • Movies

    From The American President
    • "America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight."
    • "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours."
    • "You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free"."
    • We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them.
    • Leon, somewhere in Libya right now, a janitor's working the night shift at Libyan Intelligence headquarters. He's going about doing his job... because he has no idea, in about an hour he's going to die in a massive explosion. He's just going about his job, because he has no idea that about an hour ago I gave an order to have him killed. You've just seen me do the least presidential thing I do.
    • People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference.
  • Books

    From Fahrenheit 451 by Bradbury:
    • "We must all be alike. Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal. Each man the image of every other; then all are happy, for there are no mountains to make them cower, to judge themselves against."
    • "People want to be happy, isn't that right? Haven't you heard it all your life? I want to be happy, people say. Well, aren't they? Don't we keep them moving, don't we give them fun? That's all we live for, isn't it? For pleasure, for titillation? And you must admit our culture provides plenty of these."
    • "If you don't want a man unhappy politically, don't give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one. Better yet, give him none. Let him forget there is such a thing as war."
    • "If there were no war, if there was peace in the world, I'd say fine, have fun! But, Montag, you mustn't go back to being just a fireman. All isn't well with the world."
    • "If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you'll never learn."
    • "All right, he's had his say. You must take it in. I'll say my say, too, in the next few hours. And you'll take it in. And you'll try to judge them and make your decision as to which way to jump, or fall. But I want it to be your decision, not mine, and not the Captain's. But remember that the Captain belongs to the most dangerous enemy of truth and freedom, the solid unmoving cattle of the majority. Oh, God, the terrible tyranny of the majority."
    • ""What a dreadful surprise," said Beatty. "For everyone nowadays knows, absolutely is certain, that nothing will ever happen to me. Others die, I go on. There are no consequences and no responsibilities. Except that there are. But let's not talk about them, eh? By the time the consequences catch up with you, it's too late, isn't it, Montag?""
    • "We're going to meet a lot of lonely people in the next week and the next month and the next year. And when they ask us what we're doing, you can say, We're remembering. That's where we'll win out in the long run. And some day we'll remember so much that we'll build the biggest goddamn steam-shovel in history and dig the biggest grave of all time and shove war in and cover it up. Come on now, we're going to go build a mirror-factory first and put out nothing but mirrors for the next year and take a long look in them.""

Blurbs

About me:

I am a Libertarian, but I just became a member of the party on Nov 5 after having been on the path for several years.

For me, it started with works of fiction such as The Veritas Conflict and The Lights of 10th Street by Shaunti Feldhahn as well as Warrior Class by Dale Brown. From Ms. Feldhahn, I came to the realization that God's greatest gift to mankind was our freedom of choice. From Mr. Brown, I began to realize - though he didn't intend it this way - that a foreign policy of non-interventionism is the best policy any nation can have.

Although I supported Bush in 2000 (though I was too young to actually vote at the time) and 2004, it was around 2004 that I began to be disillusioned with what the Republican Party - the party my family still supports - stood for and the directions it was heading. I began to realize more and more exactly how precious God's gift of freedom was to us humans, and that both the Democratic and Republican parties were assaulting that freedom from every angle at every turn. Because each party was equally guilty - and I did not yet know about the LP - I began a one man campaign when talking to my friends, trying to convince them that there HAD to be some better way.

Then, in 2007, I learned of a Republican from Texas who appeared to be the very antithesis of George W. Bush. He was a doctor who believed in nothing more than the Constitution of the United States of America. I voted for that man in the GA Presidential Preference Primary, though I was among only about 3% or so that did.

To me, that was the final straw in my connection with the Republican Party. I had heard of Dr. Paul's connection to the Libertarian Party, but didn't actively persue the link yet.

Around this time, I was reading a blog on AJC.com written by my former Congressman from when I lived with my parents in the North GA house they still live in. The blog was called The Barr Code and it was written by none other than Bob Barr. I saw that he stood where I stood, and he was fighting to make a difference. When he won the Libertarian Party's POTUS nomination, the LP won another convert, though it would be a few more months before I would make it official.

Note that since then, I have learned how much of a Libertarian Bob Barr is NOT. I was wrong to support him as a man, but I stand behind my decision to vote for the Libertarian nominee for President.

GA House Districts in the LeDoLP area: 148 (mine -Lee/Terrell counties), 134 (Sumter county), 147(Crisp/Worth counties), 149 (Calhoun county), 150 (Baker/Dougherty counties), 151 (Dougherty County - mostly City of Albany), 152 (Lee/Worth/Dougherty counties), 171 (Mitchell County)

GA Senate Districts in the LeDoLP area: 14 (Sumter), 13 (Lee/Worth/Crisp), 12 (Terrell/Calhoun/Dougherty/Baker/Mitchell), 11 (Mitchell)

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who wants to talk politics. I'm open to any and all discussions, and you'll probably find a wide range on my blogs. I'd like to get people from all political persuasions talking eventually, and maybe we can all learn from each other.

It's nice to have a discussion with someone that doesn't resort to cussing and name calling when you don't agree. :) I enjoyed that. I'm reluctant to leave comments sometimes for fear it will start drama.
