"It's not about politics; it's about people." As a Pararescueman in Iraq, my job was to save lives. If someone needed our help, we'd do everything in our power to provide it. If that meant jumping from an airplane or fast-roping from a helicopter, it didnt matter; we were willing to risk our lives for theirs not only because it was our job, but because it was the right thing to do. It wasnt about politics; it was about people.
Im no longer in Iraq and Im no longer a Pararescueman. But, many of my fellow veterans still need help. When I left Iraq, I left with my good health, losing nothing but innocence. The nearly 18,000 wounded Americans were less fortunate. Many lost limbs or eyesight. When I poured with sweat and complained about the heat, they spilled their blood and gritted their teeth. I couldnt be there to deflect the bullet or defuse the bomb; its too late for that.
But, it's not too late to show we're grateful for their sacrifice. As many combat veterans struggle to cope with lifelong disabilities, they deserve the same level of support now that we were willing to provide in those critical moments after they were wounded. The mission to help disabled veterans, like the Pararescue mission to save lives, is clear: its the right thing to do.
Swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar is our challenge in their honor: We'd cross oceans and continents for these courageous men and women. And, thats what we plan to do. In July, two of us will brave strong currents, ships, and sharks in an attempt to become only the 16th and 17th Americans to officially swim the 12.5 miles across the Strait of Gibraltar, from Spain to Africa. Its not going to be easy. But, it's not supposed to be.
The swim is symbolic of the challenge faced by thousands of disabled veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq who now fight their most difficult battles of recovery. The goal is to raise money and awareness for their cause through our chosen charity, the non-partisan and non-profit registered 501(c)(3), "Salute America's Heroes." This charity was created specifically to provide support programs for disabled veterans that government agencies like the VA unfortunately do not.
But, we can't do it alone. We need your help. And so do they. Please take a moment to sponsor us. It's very easy and completely secure - you can donate online by credit card or by check and receive a record of your donation. Even the smallest amount will help. Thanks for your support!
