For the third installment of SWINDLE’s Annual Icons Issue we unearthed another eclectic round of icons—from an illustrator to an adult film star, skateboarder to a politician. We spent a year preparing this issue and we’re proud of its span. It includes more than 50 cultural heavyweights, capturing the sometimes humorous, sometimes eccentric, sometimes tenacious, sometimes gallant, manifestations of the iconic.
A number of our featured icons have spent their careers exploring what culture can be. Paul Reubens’ off-beat act brought lowbrow and highbrow together, making absurdity provocative; Ice-T found a life for himself as a rapper before rap was a viable genre; Pam Grier merged femininity with an unapologetic muscularity, showing that actress and activist can be synonymous.
Then there are those who function more as truth seekers than culture makers. Naomi Klein’s exposés on capitalism and globalization have shaken up the status quo of both the left and right wing; James Natchwey’s photojournalism has humanized moments of disaster, bringing attention away from the bigness of the event and back to the vulnerability of people.
The issue also includes Al Green, Candace Bushnell, Futura, Hugh Hefner, Ice Cube, Paul Smith, Takeru Kobayashi, Slayer, Tommy Chong and many more!
