Swings and Roundabouts magazine's Interests
General
Your opinion on everything counts!
Music
We want live reviews! We're getting old and need help identifying good music these days, so we're looking for news of gigs, festivals, anywhere you've come across music...send us a review!
Movies
Have you seen a film that the masses have ignored? Do you have a cinematic love that you want to share with the world? Share it with us...
Television
Ah the lowliest of media...but not forgotten. Give us your views on how Neighbours has gone downhill (all you students and bar workers), why Dungeons and Dragons was the best cartoon ever or how Exploitica saved your post-Saturday night kinky porn urges on Channel 4.
Books
Books are those oft-forgotten things that taught us all how to read so we could decipher tv guides.
Swings and Roundabouts is a creative magazine, based in Manchester but accepting contributions from anywhere in the world.
How many of us talk about when 'I used to write/paint/have an opinion'? How long has it been since you had a reason to share something you've been harbouring?
We accept anything, from short stories, artwork and poetry to interviews, reviews and rants about things you love or hate...there are no themes, no restrictions, just the length - the magazine is A6, teeny enough to fit in your pocket!
To reward all our friends, we launch every issue with a party - people are welcome to read out, there is music and occasionally the live variety, and you get a sneak peak at the brand new work.
Get in touch with us if you want to send us something, or if you're curious...

This is an unmissable show! After the rave reviews of Sam Amidon's last show in Manchester, where, in league with Red Deer Club, we arranged for Sam to play at the Unitarian Chapel with a string quartet, we couldn't wait for the opportunity to bring him back. Since that time, his album All is Well has been critically lauded and the media have finally caught on to the New Yorker's immense talent.
Incredibly, the opportunity that has arisen includes a touring party from Sam's Icelandic label, Bedroom Community. Sam will be performing with a six-piece band, including legendary producer and Bedroom Community chief, Valgeir Sigurðsson.
And if that isn't enough for you, Valgeir will also be performing tracks from his own album, Ekvílibríum, a critically lauded masterpiece of electronica-laced folk.
To cap it all, the night will be kicked off by support from Manchester's own acoustic-electronica maestro, Denis Jones; having waited two years to play in this wonderful venue, he will be playing his fourth show here inside two months, after support for Jack Rose, Phosphorescent and Chris Corsano.
FINE MUSIC FROM FINE LADS. AND ONLY A POUND EACH. 8PM AT THE CARLTON CLUB (cheapdrinkscheapdrinks) WHALLEY RANGE.
TOM HICKOX Blending the macabre narrative and vocal performance of such songwriting heavyweights as Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Scott Walker, with melodies that permeate and resonate, Hickox’s music is unique on the British music scene. At once complicated and simple, quirky and passionate; these songs reveal a great voice and song.
’This provides a lesson to bands like Clor in how to combine electronica with both musical and emotional depth. It’s well constructed, intelligent music from a singer/songwriter who aims to be different and not peddle out soppy ballads.’ Manilla Magazine . SPARKY DEATHCAP Sparky Deathcap wears a hoodie with felt animal ears sewn onto the hood, and twists proggy guitar loops against the sound of himself whistling a lovely dawn chorus." -Emily Bick, Plan B Magazine
"Very witty-Time out
"It’s reminiscent of a slightly more good humoured Smog with its dry crackle and old-fashioned hue" –Manchestermusic. co. uk
KLAUS SAYS BUY THE RECORD "Musically, it’s pitched somewhere between Anthony and the Johnsons and Beirut, with lashings of piano and the occasional ukelele. Quality wise, it’s going to sneak up behind you and steal your eardrums - it’s a genuinely surprising fantastic collection of songs, and probably one of the most accomplished albums to emerge locally in the last ten years. You have no excuse other than poor taste, and maybe (just maybe) death. x
The northern adventures of BigSexyLand continue at Charlie's. And if you're the geezer from last time, no, we've really not got any Aerosmith. Please stop asking.
If you're not that geezer, then feel free to ask for the very best in pouting pop, lethal electro and seriously corrosive acid.
After a few months on the edge of town, the northern branch of BigSexyLand swashbuckles its way right into Manchester's fluttering heart with a cheeky wink and a twinkle in its eye.
The non-stop neurotic cabaret is moving to the opium-den-like environs of Charlie’s, bringing the beautiful dancers of Manchester town the best in ultra-shock electro, classic acid, velvet draped goth, party punk funk, pouting pop and bleeding edge electronic weirdness. Mail us at list@bigsexyland.co.uk for cheaper entry.
