Robbin the liquor store (featuring Willy Willy) -----------------------------------------------------------------Swinnen has got the guts. After his appreciated début last year, the band comes up with a live album. This Cd is a true document, recorded in the cosy atmosphere of the AB club.
Songs from "Hazy", recorded after the Scabs era, are alternated with some new work from the album "Swinnen". ------------
In a time of projects here and there, and overproduced song records, Swinnen comes out with a live CD. A cosy piece of club-atmosphere, sweat, and (for as long as it may last) cigarettes. Maybe this was not the best commercial step for Swinnen to take. But commercial issues have never been a priority for the gray-headed singer and his steaming band. -----------
It is amazing how two albums can emit so much ambiance. 'Live in Brussels' draws upon the CD 'Hazy', recorded by Guy Swinnen in 1998 after the split of The Scabs, and 'Swinnen' (2005), the latter being cheered by the press but reviled by the radio. ------------
Two remarkable covers: On the one hand 'Fifty Ways to Leave your Lover' by Paul Simon, starting as a ballad but exploding in powerful Kravitz-like-rock at the chorus, which gives the song it's own personality.
'Cinnamon Girl',. on the other hand is a quite loyal ode to Master Neil Young. ------------
The enthusiastic reactions from the live audience tells us that the popsong 'But Never Mind.. ', recorded for the compilation 'Te Gek!?' with Kathleen Vandenhoudt, are not experienced as a "cast-off". ------------
And then there's the bonus track. You'll recognise it by the smell of whiskey and 'loose women'. Old buddy 'Willy Willy' introduces the riff of 'Robbin'n the Liquor Store' in his own famous way. ----------
Old Rockers are still alive, man. And they still make records. Like this one! -----------
