<<< Hailing from a country which counts the practice of breaking plates after a meal amongst its traditions, it should come as no surprise that Greek outfit Straighthate are capable of creating a fair old racket. "Indigenous" is predominantly a grindcore record, and the band play with the technicality and aggression of the finest exponents of the genre while incorporating elements of death metal and numerous changes of pace to ensure the listener remains continually engaged. Vocalist Panos is a real talent, but the entire band are worthy of praise throughout an album which is consistently strong.

<<< The Greeks STRAIGHTHATE is a hard working band. If you follow the live events in Greece it’s impossible not to see them in action at least once or twice. So the time has come for the first full length release of the band after the “Grim Memories” mcd in 2004. The evolution of their sound is very impressive! The deathcore of the mcd is now inoculated mainly with big doses of grind speeds in the vein of Nasum, Brutal Truth and secondly with black metal influences, post-hardcore psychedelic tunes and a death metal atmosphere that brings to mind Incantation.
“Indigenous” is a full variety orgy in every aspect of extreme music. Dynamic production, super hate vokills , sonic speeds, compositions that combine the different styles in a marvelous way, powerful performing and impeccable attitude. I urge all the fans of the genre to go to www.myspace.com/sxh to convince themselves of what I ‘m saying, although the two best songs “Higher” and the twelve - minute “Which One Of Us Is Gonna Die First?” are included only in the cd . Don’t loose your time and buy it! “ Indigenous” is surprisingly good and for sure it gives the promise to expect more from STRAIGHTHATE in the future.

<<< STRAIGHTHATE are not something new in the Metal scene. The Athenian Hardcore/Grind act has been active for 8 whole years and has been torturing our ears since then. "Indigenous", that is being released through Blastbeat Mailmurder Productions, is probably the most interesting work these sickos have released until now, and I suggest you have your ears open to witness what they have to say.
Through all those 8 years, STRAIGHTHATE have managed to share the stage with international and local (Greek) bands like BURST, BORN FROM PAIN, HATEBREED, STAMPIN' GROUND, CURSED, INVERACITY and many more. The band surely has a lot of experience on its back, and this is more than obvious in its debut full-length album "Indigenous", which is issued through the vocalist's own label Blastbeat Mailmurder.
The band's debut album features the "classic" STRAIGHTHATE clever Grind, along with many Crust touches that make them get away from all the common noise shit, and take their music one step further. The band's main element in this recipe is pure hate. Panos is the one that clearly expresses the only feeling that floats above every single track, and the rest of the band members help him with the best thing they could do, play some precise and technical brutal shit! The music varies from Grind outbreaks, to Thrash touches and smooth Post Rock breaks.
The Athenian extreme metallers have managed to create an album that gets away from their simpler Hardcore/Thrash past and leads them to a more modern and complex style that will definitely help them enter the world of 21st century's Metal scene and get their name heard everywhere. Opinionated, outspoken and armed with noteworthy musicianship, Straighthate are truly a force to be reckoned with when it comes to extreme music.
They hail from Athens , Greece and "Indigenous" marks as their first full-length (preceded by 2004’s “Grim Memories” mini-CD).
With one foot planted firmly in the band’s grindcore/hardcore roots, and the other one in the metal spectrum, the five-piece draws its influences heavily from the whole, past and present, Relapse roster to deliver a work of remarkable high quality.
“Indigenous” sets out, through 12 gripping, well worked-out compositions, to re-establish the importance of indigenous cultures in the minds and the hearts of its listeners.
Shrieking, high-pitched (mainly) vocals, hammering drums, thrashing guitar riffs and thundering bass lines all work together coherently towards that end.
The album kicks off in a straight-up, no bullshit, all guns blazing kinda way that brings back late 80s grindcore and early 90s death metal memories, a pattern which more or less remains prevalent until track six (“Curse the Unholy Corpse of Jesus”).
From track seven (“Stench of Immortality”) onwards, black metal influences start breaking in and this is where Straighthate totally shred. In songs such as “Kollapse”, “Procreate” and “Stench of Immortality” the guitar lines project a feeling of grim, unholy and rare-to-find blackness that’s bound to haunt the mind for weeks. Then, a “post”, acoustic six-minute interlude comes to calm things down and lead the sonic journey of “Indigenous” to its apocalyptic, cathartic end.
A strong and genuine anti-christian stance drives the whole concept and battles lyrics-wise middle class kids, the “cannibalistic” mentality of contemporary societies and “the holy stench” in defense of a past that’s gone but not forgotten.
Since crystal balls and tarot cards do not actually fall within the areas of my expertise, I cannot really answer Straighthate’s question “which one of us is gonna die first?”
What I know though with certainty is that these 12 impiously irreverent Straighthate songs can easily secure us all a place in hell.
<<<"Indigenous" is the latest outing from Greek death/grinders Straighthate (on Blast Beat Mailmurder), which puts forth 12 tracks of the band's continually progressing outbursts in about 40 minutes. There are definitely still plenty of relentlessly blasting drumbeats and blazing tremolo picking riffs backing vocals that shift from burly growls to strained, snarling screams (and everything in between) - as well as thick, at times subtly melodic death metal riffs and loads of churning dissonance and winding layering that's somewhat reminiscent of Napalm Death circa "Fear, Emptiness, Despair" - but there's a lot of variety tucked away beneath the surface. As a whole it's a consistent and focused album where most of the compositions keep things fairly short and to the point, relying on a strong sense of groove - both in terms of the speed and the occasional presence of some "moshy" breakdowns. There are a few fucking outstanding moments, though - such as the rare energetic bursts of more overt melody or some oddly droning/noisy lead lines… and just check out those eerie acoustic guitars that pop up out of nowhere during "Higher"!? Awesome. The recording's a tad on the muddy side, but that's not an issue - just suggestive that there's room for improvement on some level. That density keeps things punchy and in your face without obscuring any of the intricacies of the more involved riffing or the vocals - which actually have a lot of really nice texture and audible strain that makes them sound genuinely ripping. The disc is then housed in a slick looking glossy digipack with some mildly abstracted landscape photos that do sort of tie-in to the general tone of the socio-politically oriented lyrics that tackle religion, the status quo, and a general sense of doom regarding the prospects of the future. Good stuff. This is certainly the band's strongest work to date, and continues to point to bigger and better things to come, so I'll always be curious to see how everything transpires…>>> (www.aversionline.com)
BIOGRAPHY
STRAIGHTHATE are an underground unit from Athens, Hellas-Greece. They were founded in 1999 from veterans of the local DIY punk/hardcore circuit. After a lot of line-up changes the music style has evolved from mid-tempo metallic hardcore to thrashy deathcore, as it can be heard on our debut, self-produced "GRIM MEMORIES" mini-CD, which was released by Panos' underground label/distro BLAST BEAT MAILMURDER after a lot of setbacks in 2004. We're known to play brutal shows & have shared the stage with local &international kommandoz such as BURST, BORN FROM PAIN, HATEBREED, STAMPIN' GROUND, DARKEST HOUR, CURSED, SUN OF NOTHING, INVERACITY, etc. We've also contributed with our own necro rendition of SLAYER's "Black Magic" to Blackfish Record's (UK) "International Tribute To Thrash Metal".
Our current style has been concocted out of what we like more in hard/ extreme/ underground music. From swedish grindcore, to death metal, thrash, hardcore, crust, blackmetal, hydraheadmetal & in general, everything inspiring & heavy. Our lyrics & aesthetics deal with antireligious evidence, modern life absurdity, self-loathing, etc. In Oktober&November 2006 we have recorded our debut album INDIGENOUS @ ROCKSOUND STUDIOS w/ George Briggos (Homo Iratus, Into The Gore, Less Than Human, Rafferty Rules) in Salonika.
