Hey, there's loads of good music out there, have you noticed? Great! And on that very topic, I'd like to take this opportunity to plug 6167 Music. They do a great line in promo cds as well as other good stuff, and seem to be the kind of people you wouldn't mind having a pint with. What are you waiting for? www.6167music.co.uk :)
Music
Recently played: I've been to a car boot sale in a Blackpool shop run by a Collective, and here's what I got; "Southern Soul", Sam & Dave; "International Velvet", Catatonia; "Blues Is My Middle Name", Ray Charles; REM's 'Uncut' cd; "Red House", Jimi Hendrix and Friends; "Legends Volume 2", Ray Charles; "The Crossing", Paul Young; "Reload", Tom Jones; "Reggae Hits Volume 6"; "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing", Marvin Gaye; "What You Say Is What You Sweat", Aretha Franklin; "River Deep, Mountain High", Ike and Tina Turner. (£19.00 for the lot, what a bargain!) Live bands in 2009: Ruthie Foster (utterly magnificent); Eric Bibb (the black Clapton, and that's not a compliment); Eli 'Paperboy' Reed and the True Loves (a towering talent); Focus (compellingly, fabulously, odd, even allowing for them being Dutch); The Phantom Band (definitely special, but turn it up and lose the beard, eh?); Konrad (good harmonies); Love Casino (terrible name, great band); Marie McCormick Blues Band (wonderful); Main Street Blues (very good at what they do); Jan The Man From Amsterdam (whimsical even by Amsterdam standards); ist (spelled wrongly, I fear); The Beatles (on a rooftop in Amsterdam; at least, I think it was The Beatles). And now for a Public Service Announcement; If you were to say to me that you had never heard 'Love She Can Count On' by Smokey Robinson, I would immediately offer you my heartfelt condolences, inform you that I, too, had been in this unfortunate position until recently, and sincerely hope that you would rectify the situation at your earliest possible convenience. Thank you very much for your time. :)
Movies
Blade Runner (but not the director's cut); The Blues Brothers; The Godfather II; This Is Spinal Tap; The Exorcist; Blazing Saddles; Van Helsing; Fargo; Wayne's World; Twins of Evil; Shawshank Redemption; Zulu; The Libertine; Babyface; In The Heat Of The Night; Young Frankenstein; Blood Simple; Matrix; Bugsy Malone. And lots of other stuff. Don't know much about films and am too lazy to find out. If anyone wants to teach me, that'd be quite good. However, it's only fair to point out that I don't think films are as important as music or food, so my attention might wander. Just poke me in the ribs if it does. (And on that subject: remember, kids, you can live for quite a long time without food, but your soul will die pretty damn quickly without music. This has been another Public Service Announcement.)
Television
I have now got two tellies, one with a built-in video player, two dvd players, and a video recorder. None of them work. I can't get any channels, and the video player that works only works to the extent of playing the sound accompanied by the visual equivalent of a 200 microgram acid trip. So I've got no idea what's going on in tellyland. This state of affairs doesn't bother me unduly.
Books
Yes please. Currently reading: "Seven Pillars of Wisdom", T.E. Lawrence; The Howard Marks Book of Dope Stories; "The War Lord", Malcolm Bosse. Recently finished: "Pandamonium", Christopher Brookmyre; "The Yes Man", Danny Wallace; "Roots", Alex Haley; "Aunts Don't Use Gusset Plugs", P.G. Wodehouse. And on the subject of books, I think it's appropriate to note the passing of George MacDonald Fraser in January 2008. Author of the Flashman books amongst other work, and the acknowledged master of the scrupulously well-researched historical novel, he will be sadly missed. His last book, "The Reavers", was published (by Harper Collins) shortly before his death, and I heartily recommend anything and everything he wrote. R.I.P.
Heroes
I thought The Stranglers sorted all that out? And who was it that said "heroes are for zeroes"? Richard Hell?
About me: Hello, thanks for dropping in. Biscuit? If you're looking for the music, it's at www.myspace.com/adjournments or www.adjournments.co.uk along with some mp3s and live performance videos and pics and all good stuff like that. Otherwise, please feel free to have a wee browse. Have a listen to whatever undoubtedly superb tune I've got up at the moment, why don't you, or have a skwatch at the photies. It's all free, you know. The "About Me" stuff is in the blogs, sort of, if you're interested in that sort of thing. And the "interests" sections get updated farly often. Anyway, apart from having the singular honour of doing a bit of singing with The Adjournments, I also provide a specialised "passionate invective" service, ideal for weddings, funerals, bar mitzvahs, humanist troth-plighting ceremonies, etc, etc. Rates on request. (Nobody's taking me up on this, so I'll offer a free rant on the subject of your choice to the first person to get in touch. 500 words maximum, terms and conditions apply.* Your home is at risk. Well, everybody's is these days.) So, enjoy, feel free to post a comment or get in touch, and do come again. :) In the meantime, did I mention that I have a book out? No? How remiss of me. It's a blog-tastic, ebullient prose rollercoaster, and would make an ideal gift for somebody who likes that kind of thing. Despite the credit crunch, the price has been frozen at a mere £6.22, using the link below, and it's also available on Amazon. (Depending how the dollar's doing, it might cost a bit less on Amazon, although I confess that I don't understand all this high finance stuff, myself.)
A
4 track EP, titled Call Signs, it provides the perfect introduction to
the band prior to the release of their debut album, Grappling Hooks, in
early 2010.
We just started the official SToB on Facebook page so please join it! http://www.facebook.com/shaolintempleofboom Sign up for SToB email list and get 3 FREE songs not available anywhere else!
My favorite band out of Scotland is Wake the President - frickin' brilliant.
It is hard being on this side of the Atlantic getting to watch every band I have discovered recently, but living by NYC they eventually make their way here.
Definitely going to take a break from listening and writing this weekend and read through your blog! (On my way to add myself now.)
