WHAT IS THE SYFN?

The South Yorkshire Filmmakers Network is a not-for-profit organization that aims to promote and enable a wide range of networking and filmmaking activities in South Yorkshire. There are three main and equal beneficiaries of the network and its activities:

1) The network intends to provide industry new entrants with vital networking skills and assists them in navigating an increasingly complex industry. It is expected that the network will become a central hub for all of South Yorkshire's young filmmakers and freelancers within the next year. The SYFN will be affiliated with local colleges and universities who offer media production courses. It will act as a potential stepping-stone for graduates: a place to go for support and news of opportunities within the industry at the local level.

2) The network also represents, through a dialogue with the regional and national industry, the needs and desires of South Yorkshire's filmmaking community as a whole and encourages inward investment by strengthening, promoting and integrating the existing and developing media infrastructures.

3) The network intends to provide local communities with opportunities in media production that would otherwise be unavailable to them. This includes training initiatives for young people and minority groups and the provision of professional a production service at low/negotiable rates. Who can join?

Anyone who can display experience of or a commitment to working in the moving image industries (and who lives in the general vicinity) can join the SYFN. Members currently range from semi-professional and professional filmmakers to postgraduate film students and individuals attempting to make the transition from other fields. Members include writers, producers, directors, actors, sound designers, musical composers, editors, camera operators, sound recordists and animators, amongst others.

WHO RUNS THE NETWORK?

Dr Rob Speranzanow works for the Network full time as Head of Operations.

Rob is a PhD graduate from the University of Sheffield. His thesis explored the intersections of Film and Poetry and one of Rob's own pet projects is the series of Film Poems that he has produced through SYFN. Rob is a native New Yorker but has settled in South Yorkshire because of the unique and exciting film and media opportunities here. Rob is primarily a producer and production manager and those skills are being put to good use in his running of the Network's day to day operations. The SYFN is committed to providing a useful and dynamic service to the region's filmmaking talent. As a not for profit organisation, the Network does not allow its directors to make profits from any of its operations. This organisation was set up with the intention of strengthening the film and media community in South Yorkshire, encouraging companies and freelancers to live and work in the region and locate their projects here and to create a buzz that can spread nationwide and beyond. If you would like to see a copy of the SYFN's annual report or would like more information on our aims and objectives, please contact rob@syfn.org or speranza@btconnect.com

Thanks, man!

The screening was just a taster, a test, a preview! And all that. It'd be great to arrange a low-cost screening for the Showroom; their latest regime seems to have upped the costs!

I'm based in Kitchener, Canada now, but make it back there often enough. If I can help at all, I will! I'm also wanting to organise talent exchanges. Try emailing me personally at jaybaker@mediaactivist.com

Thanks for the support mate!
