'Sylvia grew up in a musical family with her dad(Joe Smith) on the fiddle and mom(Helen Smith) on the guitar. Her dad's fiddle music was well known on New Brunswick's Kingston Peninsula but during Sylvia's younger years she herself hadn't yet learned to appreciate the music yet.
After her father's death Sylvia decided to follow in her father's footsteps and take up the fiddle in 1989 with the assistance of Ivan and Vivian Hicks as a member of their group, The Sussex Avenue Fiddlers. Fiddle music has since become a large part of Sylvia's life and she's found it to be a most rewarding and exciting hobby, and has made many fine friends. "Music is one of the best hobbies in my life." she says. With the encouragement of Ivan and Vivian, Sylvia eventually started organizing Kitchen Parties on the Kingston Peninsula with her brother Fraser Smith which have become quite popular during the summer months.
She composed the tune "Bonnie’s Waltz," and named it for her daughter Bonnie. She plans to continue playing and hopes to improve her technique over the years.
In 2003, Sylvia retired from her career in the x-ray department at her local hospital and took up a new endeavor, the art of yodelling. With her skill increasing, she's been making concert appearances and in 2007 will release her first full length album titled, "Echoes and Strings" which will feature her fiddle playing as well as yodelling.
Her family are ever important to her and Sylvia would like to thank her husband Archie, and family for their patience and support with her music.
If you are in New Brunswick during the summer months, she still holds Kitchen Parties at Long Reach on the beautiful Kingston Peninsula. These are great fun and you can email Sylvia for info on these."
