Books
Unlike other contemporary young black authors similiar to myself, growing up in my household, we read Tolkein, Shakespere, Alex Haley, Jane Austen, Sylvia Platt, Richard Wright, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, and very old writers that most had died before my time.
Once I became a teenager, I was addicted to historical romances like Katherine Woodwiss, Johanna Lindsay, & Virginia Henley. I hadn't even known about Beverly Jenkins until I was 16 years old, when I met her at a Woman's Expo. (but of course I became addicted). I had decided to be a novelist from the time I was 12 and my foundation of all my stories have always been romance. I then became addicted to Stephen King, James Patterson, Anne Perry and more suspense, horror and mystery writers after I reached 20. Five years later, I then also started picking up Octavia Butler, Toni Morrison, Terry McMillian and started being a regular visitor to Zane's site when she first got started.
So when people say my novels are like reading those great old stories with a contemporary feel, well then you know why. The people I've read and loved before have shaped me into the African American romance erotic, suspense intrigue author that I am today.
