PJ KIMMEL (VOCALS) began his interest in music as a percussionist and drummer in 1991. His attraction to music stayed very rhythm-based as he began to explore the guitar and songwriting. After playing in numerous bands during his school days, most notably, the ska-punk band 3 Weeks, Kimmel took a hiatus from performing to go to college. Now back in the Minneapolis music scene, he revisited his songwriting days and got together with former band mates to form and play as the band symbol R...........
JAMES GRIMM (BASS) started playing bass in the Nirvana glory days. After high school and the success of his band 3 Weeks, Grimm played with many differed songwriters and bands. The most notable experience within the last several years has been performing as bassist with the Maladies. The Maladies had a bimonthly gig at the 5 Corners Saloon (now The Nomad) and played clubs all over the Minneapolis area including the Fine Line, the Terminal Bar and Bunkers...........
SCOTT PALMER (DRUMS) is still continuing his advanced education in drumming and percussion. Palmer is a Band teacher at a southwest suburb of Mpls High School. He has traveled to many countries to play and preform with Cuban fusion groups, Brazilian ensembles, African Drum Tribes, and numerous rock bands and 80's cover bands. Prior bands Palmer has been a part of include Vale Todo, Bad News Jones, and Merken. Palmer was also a member of the ska-punk band 3 Weeks. With significant experience in jazz, funk, rock, and world music, Palmer adds a very complex element to the rock-style of symbol R...........
DEREK WEINBERGER (GUITAR) is the newest member of the band symbol R. He honed his guitar playing skills while studying in Montana and playing with a variety of bar bands, including Point.6 in Missoula, Mont. His unique style and creative songwriting have added significant layers to symbol R’s music, making a considerable impact on the band’s sound.
The band symbol R was formed by current members PJ Kimmel and James Grimm. Kimmel, lead vocalist/guitarist, and Grimm, bassist, have been playing and writing music together for over 10 years. During their high school days, they met drummer Scott Palmer, and found the skill to match their desire. The three players formed and performed as the band 3 Weeks, a ska-punk band. The band was a significant success, playing numerous gigs around the Twin Cities, St. Cloud and the western suburbs. Additionally, the band recorded a full-length album and wrote and performed music for commercials. After the success of 3 Weeks, Kimmel, Grimm, and Palmer went to separate colleges in an attempt to lead normal lives. Now that all three are back in Minneapolis, they have reunited to form the band symbol R. They have been playing the University of Minnesota bar scene for the past few months and their vision as a band is rapidly taking form. The addition of Derek Weinberger on guitar has made symbol Rs sound full, layered and complete. The band consistently pounds out a signature salty-sweet rock style and their devoted fan base is drawn to both the rhythmic song structure and the storytelling lyrics of their all-original set. Kimmel’s carefully penned lyrics, Grimm’s tight bass lines, Weinberger’s melodies and Palmers measured beats are being revered by many on the inside of the Minneapolis music scene. ----REFERENCES: Club Undergroud Mpls, Minn; O'Gara's Garage St. Paul, Minn; Fine Line Music Cafe Mpls, Minn; Stub and Herbs Mpls, Minn. I just wanted to stop by to say hello and give you a little update on what Blood Root Mother is up to! We will be recording an EP of new music in August, and we recently finished recording a live DVD. The DVD is currently unreleased and I actually just saw it for the first time a few days ago. It features the last two performances with Tony Ellis still alive, and some footage from the tribute show we played on the night of his funeral.
There are some cool covers, as well as some NEW music that will be on our upcoming EP. We're very excited about the new music and we'd like to share a sneak peak with you. Here's a video of a new tune called Run Bobby Run:

Howdy hey.....I wanted to take a minute to thank you for allowing us to be a part of your online community. Also to share well wishes and say, it is our hope, you're having a super groovy summer !!!
Well kids,
It's about time we extend a warm hand from the cold grip of the internet and finally say "howdy". We are a band comprised of filthy musicians who eat poorly, don't sleep much, and otherwise could never be caught dead hanging out with such cool people like you.
We understand that without you, the listener, we would have no canvas for which to paint our masterpiece (which we totally swear is coming... sometime) and it's going to take a whole lot more of you to get where we're going.
We're not the type of dickbags that would say "NO! Don't burn our album and give it to all your friends." We want that. The more people we have listening to us, is all the more that will come see us in concert and have a good time.
Life is short people. Let's get drunk. Let's get laid. Let's fuckin' do cool shit.
If you want to get to know us. Write us. We've got nothing better to do. We'll read it. We'll probably write back. Shit... you'll probably never get rid of us.
So, tell your friends. Look it up and hook it up. We're real people too.
Wow, the name PJ Kimmel sounds familiar. We must have had a few classes together at Anoka High School. Good to see you again ("see" in a myspace kind-a-way). Good luck with your band.
