T2 BIOGRAPHY
Once known predominantly for his pioneering sounds of bassline, T2 has now begun his crossover into the mainstream. The twenty year old producer is much in demand and has recently worked with Craig David, Kelly Rowland and Platinum as well as having done remixes for the likes of Kate Nash and J Holiday.
New single, ‘Better Off As Friends’ (LALALA)is a melodic mix of summer vibes and pop tinged production set to catapult T2 firmly into the realms of commercial music. The track features vocalist H Boogie and is sure to be a summer smash with the potential to raise T2’s profile on a global scale.
T2’s first taste of success came in 2007 when smash hit single, Heartbroken ripped it’s way across Europe, becoming the urban club anthem of the year (released by AATW, a subsidiary of Universal) and reaching number 2 in the mainstream charts. Having made a serious dent on the dance floor, the track received widespread accolades, holding the top spot on 1Xtra’s garage chart for 23 weeks as well the coveted position of Jo Whiley’s track of the week on Radio One. Not bad for a lad from Leeds who couldn’t even get into music college!
“I’d had personal problems which led to me not passing my GCSEs. That hurt me when I couldn’t even get onto a music course, I was so in love with music and I’d been producing from the age of 13 and operating a mixing desk from 14, so probably knew more about the studio equipment than anyone working there. I just wanted the qualification.”
Instead of kicking back and becoming another unemployment statistic, T2 used the set back to spur him on, building up a catalogue of tunes in his bedroom. By 2004, inspired by the organ house sounds that infiltrated the Leeds dance scene, he’d found a gap in the market. Having grown up listening to the sounds of garage, R&B, Rock and hip hop, he realised he could blend soulful melodies with shattering drum patterns. While you’d be no fool for noticing similarities in the UK garage of yesteryear, T2 became firmly rooted in the northern bassline scene; “To a certain extent I’ve invented the music I make. The rhythm is the same as the house tunes from 94/95 but I’ve implemented something else, more musical elements and a bass that grabs you… it’s like you’re treading a thin line. And no one wanted to own up to liking my tunes, I had no one playing my tunes cause it didn’t really fit into their DJ sets, it was too experimental.”
Having developed an informed sense of music business acumen, T2 is now a force to be reckoned with. His own imprint, POWERHOUSE RECORDS is established and he is constantly looking to stay ahead of the game and to continue his moniker as a trendsetter.
