The Institute of Random Events
(Tympanik Audio)
I have been feeling a little out of tune with some of the up
and coming releases in IDM recently. This might come as a bit
of a surprise if you listen to some of the regular outpourings
I'm responsible for over on Reautomation Radio which I
seemingly manage to pack out with some lovely minimalist
electronica most of the time. So when Tapage's 'The Institute
of Random Events' came under my radar, I wasn't sure what I
was going to get, and with a title like that, I'm sure that
was exactly the aim!
Starting with 'Black Tape' is an interesting introduction to
Tapage; gloriously glitchy, with random tweaks, and noises in
all the right places - it truly does give the idea of randomness.
'Lockswitch' goes in to territory not dissimilar to some Autechre
...yes...really! The album tends to veer from out and out glitch,
to gorgeous electronica ('Bloomchild' being particularly
enchanting). The album tends to go from glitch and turns more
melodic towards the end, it's certainly well mixed in that respect
as it gives a feeling of building up to something, and eventually
doesn't come across as too random at all. Another good thing worth
pointing out about this release is that it doesn't rely too
heavily on samples, which a fair few artists in electronica/idm
tend to rest on on occasion, so it's refreshing to hear something
this pure.
'The Institute of Random Events' is a stunning album and everything
that an IDM/electronica release should have going for it; glitches,
noises, haunting use of sound and melody and enough mystery to keep
the listener involved all the way to the end. Gorgeous. Prepare
yourself for hearing more from Tapage over on Re:automation Radio
for sure!
RNDM5 is an all-round artist who has been a part of many musical genres and has now dedicated himself to sound destruction and mangled synths with respect to glitch, idm, electro and 8 bit. Samples and a wide variety of instruments aid in piecing the natural world to the realm of ones and zeros.

Hello all, this will be our final release of 2009, and a great way to end the year... Pinklogik asked 10 artists and friends to remix her entire "Learning To Trust Higher Frequencies" album and what an eclectic and stunningly produced work this is. Each track has its own feel, thanks to the diverse range of artists involved in the project. A shimmering journey through ambient colours, broken beats, sweet melodies, a little bit of quantum physics, and is one hell of a trip....

[S27-030] MIN-Y-LLAN : Dark Days (Downtempo, Ambient)
We are fast approaching the last days of 2009, so what better way to celebrate than this release from Welshman "Min-Y-Llan" who offers us this collection of atmospheric ambient pieces, the melodies within are dark and cavernous, being the perfect listening for the walk home on a frozen winters evening. Each track has a very melancholic feel as if looking towards a future that isn't as bright as we hope for, but nevertheless are powerless to escape. Free download!
