L Perkins's Interests
|
| General | My headline says it all, "Table tennis 4 life!!!" | | Music | I love all table-tennis-related music, even though most of it talks about "ping-pong," which any real player will tell you is not the same thing as table tennis at all. Some of my favorite songs: "Ping Pong" by Dolly Parton, "The Death of Mr. Ping-Pong" by Was (not was), and "Ping Pong" by Anti-Pop Consortium. By my ultimate most-favorite song is "Table Tennis Table" by Gilberto Gil, because he understands that while the game is ping-pong, the sport is table tennis. | | Movies | My favorite movie of all-time is "The Little White Ball." It's a documentary coming out soon about me and table tennis. A movie like this has been a long time coming, since, other than that, there aren't nearly enough table tennis movies out there, but there's some mediocre table-tennis action in "A Matter of Life and Death," which is some 1946 movie about angels and stuff. And then there's this Japanese movie that some stupid American distributor translated as "Ping Pong," even though I'm sure the original title meant "Table Tennis" in Japanese. Still, a sweet movie, but they should have asked me to consult because some of the penhold grip action is a little lame. | | Television | I'm not a big fan of American TV, because most of the time when it talks about table tennis, it's just making fun of it. Like on Seinfeld, Dr. Katz, and King of Queens. But there was a cool episode of Star Trek (one of my favorite non-table-tennis shows) that had some table tennis action, and there's been some awesome cartoons, mostly Japanese, about table tennis. Contact me if you're interested, and I can give you some tapes.
And then there's this awesome Chinese soap opera all about table tennis. No kidding. How great is that?!? I love the Chinese, because they really understand the sport, unless one of them is across the table from me. Then I'm all hate. | | Books | I too busy training to read books. But sometimes I'll read Table Tennis Monthly. | | Heroes | Cheng Yinghua, for his speed at the table.
David Zhuang, for his power.
Ryu Seung Min, for his drive and determination.
And the one and only Robert Fischer for being my inspiration.
And myself, at least when it comes to killing with the penhold grip. |

About me:
Number one, two, and three are table tennis, table tennis, and table tennis.
Do I have other interests? Sure. But do they matter as much as table tennis? Of course not.
I'm a former table tennis national champion. Won it all back in '97. Currently, I'm ranked number 4 among native-born Americans in the country, but wrist and knee injuries have slowed me down. I'm bouncing back, though, don't worry!
Some other important accomplishments you'd see if you scanned the Mantle of Honor in my bedroom:
Seventh place at the 2000 Beijing Open. Only non-Asian to place in the top 8 in a tournament in mainland China since 1992.
Won the Ohio Pro-Am in Toledo this year!! Big victory. You may see me around town wearing the medal.
Runner-up at the Northeast Regional Championships last year in Albany. After I was given a bye into the second round of the Central California Invitational in 2003, I placed third after falling to eventual champion Johnny Li. They must have learned to fear L Perkins, since I haven't been invited back!!
Oh, and I lost in the second round of qualifying for last year's World Table Tennis Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. First American to make it the second round of qualifying since the legendary Robert Fischer in 1991. Whatever happened to that guy?!?

Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone who's into table tennis, but especially any women who might have seen me on TV and wondered from L Perkins is really all about. Also, if you're looking for someone to help promote your table-tennis-related product, I'm your man. And I'm happy to participate in any charity table tennis events, and I love to get out and work with underprivileged children. You'd be amazed at how the little white ball can just turn some of these kids' lives around.
