after over 3 years as signed recording artists, in september 2008 UK industrial metal act interlock (anticulture records) officially disbanded following their final appearance at offset festival. having released 2 albums and a remix EP with international distribution, having aired songs on MTV, MCM TV and BBC radio 1 alongside touring the united states, the united kingdom and europe extensively, interlock's demise left a significant basis of expectant fans eager to hear the follow-up to the 2005 album 'crisis//reinvention'.
hal sinden & joe butterworth, interlock's singer & drummer respectively ('the twins' - often mistaken for eachother, even by family members), decided against allowing any dust to settle and have formed talanas:
"...when joe & i first started this it was just an exercise, or at the very most a reaction to what we had been busying ourselves with at the time. promoting interlock, whilst it was solid material, was a bit like trying to sell oysters at a fast food restaurant. we figured it'd be interesting to see what it would be like to return to playing balls-to-the-wall metal, now it's gone far past that and evolved into something neither of us could've imagined." - hal
joined by ewan parry (sredni vashtar), mark 'duff' duffy (first world circus) & josiah lutton (adastreia), the band's sound is firmly placed in metal through influence from acts such as akercocke, decapitated & suffocation, whilst also introducing unexpected elements to their music via references to progressive & avant-garde / ambient artists such as david sylvian, cynic & porcupine tree. in the current climate of extreme genres, where today's metal acts are expected to bring more to the table than simply speed & attitude, talanas answer this demand by collectively sporting qualifications in modern music, sound design, performance & dramatic art. despite each being personally responsible for most strains of influenza, they are also bloody nice chaps with some truly smashing facial hair.
the london five-piece will be recording throughout the summer months at berry street studio with james dunkley (the rotted, centurions ghost, fields of the nephilim) for their debut EP 'reason & abstract', with the entire process being documented and released as video blogs through eulogy media ltd. live dates have already begun to be confirmed with tour dates now being booked for jan / feb 2010.
