THE TALIESIN STORY
The beginnings of Taliesin formed in mid 1995 when guitarists Richard Moseley and Rueben Durham met. Both guitarists had similar interests in music, mainly progressive rock/metal bands like Dream Theater, Rush and Fates Warning and decided that it would be cool to have a couple of jams. These jam sessions soon turned into song writing sessions and it was obvious that they would need to find some other musicians to see these songs truly take form. After a few months of jamming with different guys they decided it would be best to play with guys they already knew and had played with before.
Dave Howe (vocals) and Wayne Bateup (drums) had played in a band with Reuben previously and Kristern Nunney (bass) had played bass in nearly every band Richard had been in…..and so the line-up was finalized.
The next 18 months were spent writing and arranging songs for a live set and in September 1997 Taliesin played their first gig.
The band continued to play throughout 97/98.
At the start of 1999 Taliesin became a 4 piece. Dave’s work commitments took him traveling around Australia and the band were without a lead vocalist. Instead of looking for a replacement the band decided to keep rehearsing and writing some new stuff in his absence. They played two gigs in this time (with Richard singing) but overall it was a fairly unproductive year.
2000-Dave returns but Reuben moves to US
Taliesin were forced to make the decision as to whether to look for a replacement guitarist/keyboard player or to continue as a 4 piece.
Choosing to stay as a 4 piece, the band now had to try and rework their songs to fit this new format. It wasn’t easy and most of their songs had to be discarded….the two guitar lines and guitar/key lines were often quite separate and could not be reproduced by one guitar.
At the start of 2002 Taliesin decided they would record some of those songs anyway and Richard would play Reuben’s parts as closely as possible.
The band hooked up with their live sound engineer John Cougar to start the recording process and the drums and bass were recorded in two days in January 2002 in a bedroom at Dave’s place.
The guitars and vocals were then recorded in sporadic bursts over the next couple of years in whatever spare time could be found (during lunch hours etc).
The editing and mixing process was also stretched out over a lengthy period and eventually John and the band decided some outside help was needed with the mix.
Richard contacted Henning Pauly (Frameshift/Chain) in late 2006 to see if he would be interested in mixing and mastering the ep for the band.
Henning ended up not only mixing the ep but contributing keyboard on 3 of the songs and a guitar solo as well.
