New Jazz Station Press Release  (view more)

[View All Blog Entries]

   theJazz's Blurbs
About me:
A new national radio station, dedicated to playing jazz night and day, has arrived.

24 hours a day, seven days a week, we play the best of jazz in its many forms.

There really is no other station in the UK doing what we do; playing nothing but credible, authentic jazz in its many forms - whether that be bebop, swing, cool jazz, trad, blues, soul-jazz, modern jazz or smooth/fusion.

Who are we?

When the opportunity arose to launch a new station, we quickly arrived at a jazz format. We conducted extensive research which proved, without a doubt, that this is a much longed-for station, whether that be from jazz aficionados or the millions of people who love and listen to jazz-inspired music each day without labelling it.

Jazz is the only genre which didn't have its own dedicated station. This is where we come in.

LATEST NEWS: LINE-UP REVEALED

The Birth of the Cool

theJazz, the UK’s first national DAB digital radio station dedicated to playing jazz night and day, welcomes a host of star names to the station this Easter weekend as it launches its full programme schedule.

Mark Forrest, Anthony Davis, David Jensen, Margherita Taylor and Helen Mayhew will be fronting weekday programmes on theJazz.

While Mike Chadwick, Claire Anderson, Jamie Cullum, Ramsey Lewis, Tim Lihoreau, Chris Philips, Jacqui Dankworth, Digby Fairweather, Courtney Pine and Campbell Burnap will form the new station’s star-studded weekend line-up.

Mark Forrest, who also presents Drivetime and The Classic FM Chart Show on sister station Classic FM, joins theJazz as the voice of the weekday breakfast show from 6am Monday to Friday. Mark joined Classic FM in 2002 after working on various national and regional radio stations, including Heart 106.2, Virgin Radio, the Century FM network of stations and Metro Radio.

Between 10am and 2pm, LBC presenter and stand-up comedian Anthony Davis, joins from Capital Life to present the mid-morning show.

David Jensen, who presents the morning show on Capital Gold, joins theJazz to present the weekday drivetime programme. The show marks a return to his roots for Jensen who began his broadcasting career as a jazz presenter on Vancouver radio station CKLG. He also presented a jazz show on Radio Luxembourg.

Evenings from Sunday to Friday on theJazz are home to Easy Jazz at Six, a relaxing blend of laid-back music, with Margherita Taylor. Margherita, who also presents Weekend Breakfast on sister station Capital 95.8, has presented numerous music programmes on both TV and radio, including Channel Four’s T4 strand and the BBC's Top of The Pops. For the past two years she has also been invited to be one of the judges on the Mercury Music Prize.

A Mobo and Sony Award nominee and the winner of the Parliamentary Jazz Award for best broadcaster, Helen Mayhew joins theJazz to present six programmes a week on the station. From 9pm Monday to Thursday, Helen Mayhew features three hours of recorded music and live jazz sessions.

Between 3pm and 6pm on Saturday afternoons, Helen lets the listeners choose the music with You Choose the Jazz, while on Sundays at 5pm, Helen presents MyJazz, an hour-long interview programme in which some of the biggest names from the jazz world and beyond talk to Helen about their favourite jazz tracks. Mayhew joins the station from BBC Radio 3, where she presented Jazz Line Up and BBC Radio 2, where she presented Big Band Special and The Helen Mayhew Programme.

Cult Jazz broadcaster Mike Chadwick joins the station to present two weekend shows on the station. Every Friday night at 9pm, Mike features the very latest jazz releases while Saturday evenings from 6pm become the home of The Latin Party.

Beginning at 7am, the weekend breakfast show will be presented by Claire Anderson. Claire, who hosts the lunchtime show on sister station Power FM in Hampshire, previously presented on Jazz FM.

Jamie Cullum joins the weekend line-up to present a two hour-long show of his favourite tracks every Saturday morning from 11am. A self-taught musician, Jamie released his first album in 1999. Just 600 copies of the self-financed album were made, but that and his second album Pointless Nostalgic, brought him to the attention of record company bosses. His 2003 major label debut Twentysomething was the fastest-selling jazz debut in UK history, going platinum in just six weeks. The follow-up, Catching Tales, was released in 2005, the same year in which he was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Speaking about his new programme, Jamie Cullum said: “It’s great to be working on theJazz.”

New releases will form an important part of the station’s playlist and will be given a particular emphasis with the weekly two-hour theJazz Jury. Tim Lihoreau and guest critics will offer the pick of the latest releases between 1pm and 3pm every Saturday afternoon.

theJazz Party with Chris Philips follows Mike Chadwick’s Saturday evening programme from 8pm. Chris, who also presents on sister station Choice FM, chooses an upbeat jazz mix for the perfect soundtrack to Saturday evenings.

Composer, pianist and jazz legend Ramsey Lewis also joins the weekend line-up to present a two-hour documentary show from 11am on Sunday mornings. Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis features music from some of the great performers who have helped to define the jazz genre.

At 1pm on Sunday afternoons, jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth presents two hours of her favourite music. A member of jazz royalty – her father is the legendary Sir John Dankworth and her mother Dame Cleo Laine - Dankworth combines a successful and critically-acclaimed recording career with a busy performance schedule.

Jazz trumpeter Digby Fairweather follows Jacqui from 3pm on Sunday afternoons with two hours of music spanning and celebrating the heritage of jazz music.

Britain’s leading jazz saxophonist Courtney Pine turns the spotlight on the current jazz scene in the weekly Courtney Pine Experience. Broadcast every Sunday evening at 9pm, The Courtney Pine Experience will also feature Courtney’s pick of the week’s gigs. As well as playing the saxophone, Pine is an accomplished flautist, clarinettist and pianist. He was awarded an OBE in 2000 for services to jazz. He has also been honoured with a Gold Badge Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters and a Fellowship to The Leeds College of Music. In December 2005 he was also made an honorary doctor of music by the University of Westminster in London.

theJazz’s weekend programme ends on Sunday nights at 10pm in the company of trombonist Campbell Burnap presenting a mix of classic jazz tracks. Apart from Campbell Burnap’s own ‘all star’ band, he has worked with many of the great names from the traditional and mainstream jazz world.

Speaking about the schedule, Darren Henley, Managing Director of theJazz said: “We’re filling a gaping chasm in the British radio landscape, delivering Britain’s first truly national jazz radio station. Musically, we will cherish jazz’s heritage while at the same time championing jazz’s future. Our presenters are passionate advocates of the music we play and we’re all looking forward to bringing jazz to a new audience across the country.”

PAST NEWS: NAME AND LAUNCH DATE ANNOUNCEMENT

Putting on theJazz

theJazz, a new DAB digital radio station dedicated to playing jazz night and day, launched nationally at 9am on Christmas Day.

theJazz operates as a sister service to Classic FM, the UK’s most popular commercial radio station with 6.3 million listeners, including more than 400,000 4-14-year-olds. theJazz will do for jazz what Classic FM has done for classical music, in making the genre accessible to a UK-wide audience.

Like its sister service, Classic FM, theJazz will be more than a radio station, developing as a brand to include live concerts, CDs, books, podcasts, downloads, a website and TV programming.

theJazz will play music from across the jazz spectrum, including bebop, swing, cool jazz, trad, blues, modern jazz. Artists featured on the station will include Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Charles Mingus, Louis Armstrong, Weather Report, Branford Marsalis, Denys Baptiste, Jamie Cullum, Diana Krall and Madeleine Peyroux.

theJazz is available on DAB digital radio, .. at theJazz.com and on Sky and ntl:Telewest. The station will be cross-promoted from its launch in December across GCap Media’s existing brands, including Classic FM.

Throughout the course of 2007, the station will be engaging existing jazz fans and new listeners by asking the question ‘What is Jazz?’ The debate will take place on-air, .. and at live events.

Listeners will also be asked to vote for their top three jazz tracks and the second phase of the station’s launch will come over the Easter weekend with theJazz 500 – a countdown of the UK listeners’ all-time greatest jazz music.

Speaking about the launch of thejazz, Station Manager of Classic FM and theJazz Darren Henley said: “Just as Classic FM has taken classical music into the mainstream, so we want to make jazz a part of everyday life in the UK with theJazz. Jazz fans now have their own radio station, dedicated to playing the music they love night and day.”
