Tamar-kali is one of those rare artists. David Bowie has come to see her play. Nona Hendryx. Me'Shell Ndegeocello. And scores of lesser known artists seek her out when they seek inspiration for their own work. Maybe, it's the raw aggression with which she presents her musical lineage. Her mother, who also sang, found her song quieted when she was orphaned in the 1950s South. Eventually, her mother found a way to New York City where her love for music manifested itself in her love for a bass player. Together, they encouraged their only child to freely express the music that was born within her.
Like so many young Black girls with incredible voices, Tamar-kali was trained in the church. What makes Tamar-kali different, however, is that the church in which she raised her voice was Catholic. And the dark corners she found in that religion impacted her in such a way that her sound became more lush, more unexpected, more fire and less brimstone.
In subsequent years, she established herself as a dominant force with a resonant voice on the NYC rock scene. But eventually, her strength as a woman in a male-dominated genre compelled her toward her own expression as a writer & composer. She took the random break from developing original material to lend her voice in support of such artists as Fishbone & OutKast.
In 2002, Director James Spooner identified Tamar-kali as such a dynamic force in the underground punk scene that he featured her in his award-winning documentary, Afro-Punk. The international screenings have increased both her popularity & her exposure. She has since performed at such venues as Lincoln Center, Central Park SummerStage, Symphony Space, Joe's Pub, as well as Warped Tour, CBGB and festivals around the world. She also tours as one of the Easy Star All-Stars. Representing the rock edge in the band's roots-rock-reggae stylee, her haunting vocals can be heard on "Dub Side of The Moon," as well as the popular "Radiodread."
In addition to releasing the Geechee Goddess Hardcore Warrior Soul EP on her upstart record label, Tamar-kali heads her own production company & helms 3 solo projects: the Psychochamber Ensemble, Pseudoacoustic Siren Songs & the original electric configuration. She has started recording her next album, Black Bottom, to be released to be completed in the Summer of 2008.
