Individual Biogs:
Stefan:
In the early nineties Stefan formed RPM, a Brighton based 3 piece who deconstructed sampled sounds to create a musical from which combined down tempo beats, abstract sound textures and live scratch mixing. They released tracks on the MoWax label and as a solo composer/producer he was commissioned by Radiohead to remix their track Planet Telex.
His interest in the relationship between colour, sound and form led to the creation of installation pieces. As part of the sound art collective Rechord he co-developed the composition instrument 'Cubop' which enticed people to create and play with simple shapes, colours and sounds to develop a live composition.
For several years Stefan has been exploring gongs, bells, Tibetan singing bowls amongst other ideophones as he loves the way they enable me to create abstract compositions which are primordial and powerful. He has recorded an album of improvisations. He also plays Spanish guitar and sings songs with Bardo Muse. Somewhere along the line he got into Indian classical music and haven't been the same since!
Pete:
Pete has been exploring improvised music on the guitar since 1963 being involved with the arts collective 'Abraxas' in the 60s and 70s as
guitarist, composer, poet and script writer. Since then he have played
with anyone interested in seeing what happens when you open up to the
muse!
In addition to music Pete has taught and practiced yoga since 1976 developing an in-depth Teacher Training Course. In 1996 he co-founded the Parkdale Yoga Centre in Wolverhampton (UK) Prior to this he taught art, philosophy and Yoga to physically disabled adults in a Day Care setting for twenty four years. Pete holds a first class honours degree and a PhD in Philosophy and is a published author in the discipline conducting research in Eastern and Western philosophy. He is a Registered Yoga Teacher (500) with the Yoga Alliance and a founder member and Chair of the Independent Yoga Network.
David:
David plays double bass and the occasional gong. He is influenced by european and eastern folk music, reggae dub, afro-latin, the blues, minimalism, free improvisation, jazz and jazz poetry and has toured alongside poets and musicians in UK, France, Germany and Czech Republic.
Jacqui:
Jacqui specialises in Saxophone and Clarinet. Since graduating in Popular Music and Recording in 1996 her career as a musician has taken a variety of routes involving performance, session work for various signed artists, composition, and working in the recording industry. In recent years she has also been exploring the therapeutic use of sound using instruments including himalayan bowls, sruti box, voice, gamelan and gong. She is also a state registered Music Therapist working with children with autism, in nursing homes for the elderly with dementia and adults with brain injuries etc.
She currently plays with a variety of groups as well as Tambura : Akasha Rose, The Trouser Free Ensemble and The Bohemianauts. She has toured extensively overseas including Australia, Eastern Europe, Austria, Switerzland. Jacqui also writes, records and performs her own music.
Barry:
Barry says: "I think I must be one of what Mickey Hart calls "the one percent" ... the natural drummers who just can't help themselves. As a schoolboy in the 60's I had the ability to beat out the rhythms of all the pop songs on the school desk. (Remember "Wipe Out" by the Surfaris ... you'll get the idea!)”
In 1967-8 his band supported , among others, the Small Faces ( still with Rod and Jeff) and the "other" local band - The Band of Joy, which soon after was to become Led Zepplein.
A few years later he taught sculpture at art school in Cheltenham and played jazz drums with a bunch of poets! He also worked regularly with SPIRAL STAIRCASE, with whom he played for over a decade.
He also worked with a great sax player, Carlos Alvarez, who introduced him to music teaching and Barry continues to hugely enjoy today the time he spends working with young drummers.
Barry is currently drumming with a very talented young singer , MIA COPE, in a 5 piece band named JUPITER, and playing with the brilliant singer / songwriter KATHERINA HEINRICH. His musical direction is to expand the repertoire of the drum kit, and his current setup incorporates an ever changing variety of percussion in addition to the conventional kit. The latest incarnation includes cahon, hang and an array of home made percussion toys.
Cathy:
Cathy is a Brighton based musician, sound healer and music therapist who works in the creative arts therapy world with many diverse groups of people. She is a classically trained violinist, playing in various different types of ensembles and especially likes the cross over into different musical worlds. Cathy's other musical passion is singing for soul expression and can also at times be found doing creative things ..boards and other melodic instruments.
Debbie:
Debbie studied the harp with Claire Hamilton, coming to the harp from a background in classical piano. She has taught the harp for a number of years and given performances in and around Bristol. She is particularly drawn to the Celtic harp and its associations with magic, ceremony, healing and story-telling.
Many present-day Celtic harpists have inspired her, including Dominig Bouchaud, Alain Stivell and Savourna Stevenson.
As well as the folk music of Britain, Ireland and Brittainy her influences and interests include Early Music and the Western classical tradition, blues, Indian classical music, gamelan and, more recently, West African kora. She is playing a 34 stringed Celtic harp or clarsach, made for her in 1992 by Mark Barlow.
