Singer/songwriter Tammy Lucas is an Artist that is Best known for her Sexy vocals on many of HipHop/RnB classics as well as making Music with some of HipHops Finest producers, from Yep Yep! to Yesssir!
Until now Tammy has stayed behind the scenes but soon She'll be front & center; & the world will get to hear her sultry voice again.
Her Story.... Born & raised in Harlem she's the Drummer's Daughter; her Dad Ray Lucas a phenomenal musician in his own right played with some of Soul Music's Legends like( King Curtis, Jimi Hendrix, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, Donnie Hathaway & Dionne Warwick/Burt Bacarach) just to name a few. " I have memories of being in my crib listening to my Dad practice his drums, probably why I LUV beats so much. My Mom also a big music lover, had a wonderful collection of the best Soul Music that she played almost daily"(fertile ground). I started singing at 4 & at 7 was discovered by my choir director Mrs. Savorin; she told my Mom I had a beautiful voice & that she needed Me in the choir(alto).
Later I took piano, theory, & voice at the Harlem School of the Arts. In her early teens Tammy discovered Tee Scott/Better Days & Larry Levan/Paradise Garage and was educated about Good music in a very unique way.
Fresh form highschool Tammy wrote & recorded her 1st record "Hey Boy" with Boyd Jarvis & Timmy Regisford that got a mention in Billboards(this weeks highlights). After briefly performing track dates (most memorable when she sang "Music Man" acapella to Larry), Tammy continued making connections with all the right people.
" I met Nelson George at Billboard magazine thru my BFF who worked w/him; she told Nelson about Me, He told Andre Harrell who signed Tammy as Uptown records Queen of HipHop/Soul & paired her up w/Teddy Riley. Together the wrote "wishin U were here"/Capitol; Although Tammy & Teddy's time at Uptown was short lived a bond was created & those 2 Harlem kids began to make New Jack history. Baby don't Go/Goodbye Love, I Like & Round & Round/GUY, w/Timmy Gatlin & Gene Griffin. They went on to do "Is it Good to U"/Heavy D where she sang featured vocals w/Mary Brown; as well as Her solo version(that went GOLD) later recorded for the JUICE soundtrack.
The high point was writing for Michael Jackson"s Dangerous album & sharing songwriting credit w/Michael & Teddy for the song "JOY"( later recorded by Black St.) that won her an ASCAP Rythm & Soul Music Award.
The Harlem girl moved to Virginia Beach,Virginia where the hit maker T.R. set up shop when Future Records was born. Soon they discovered the Neptunes at a talent show T.R. gave at Chad & Pharrell's highschool. "I was a judge on the panel, I voted for them & I knew they would win because they were so Original; Pharrell's energy was dynamic back then & when I heard Chad's chords it was Luv at 1st sound. I told Ted I wanted them to write w/Me on my album & a new Music Family bond was created. "Tonites the Nite" was the only song we all wrote together. T.R. continued to be in such high demand that Tammy became a Mentor/Big Sis to the new comers." In fact the entire 5+ years I lived in V.A. both of my Apts. were T.Lucas Music/Neptune headquarters. The Neptunes were straight outta highschool when they started coming by almost everyday; to write music, listen to & talk about music(eat my food & use my phone LOL) but I really didn't mind. They were loaded w/Raw talent & I was happy to oblige".
After another year or so Tammy along w/the Neptunes left Future & joined forces w/Kenny Ortiz who had history w/Tammy from her 1st record. Ortiz acted as management & helped them navigate the industry without T.R. Soon Ortiz had them writing for a young Jontae Austin & SWV/Use Ur Heart & When this Feelin/RCA. Later they created a Truely soulful compilation that mainly featured songs by Tammy & the Neptunes( w/features by Joe Stone Street, Dave Hollister, Joe Thomas & Charlie Wilson) for EMI, but the execs that provided the deal were dropped & unfortunately so was the album. Undaunted Tammy went on to write & feature on "1NCE AGAIN"/Tribe called Quest along w/continuing to create w/the Neptunes on the "SUPA THUG"/Nore feat. T. Lucas. During that period Tammy worked on a plethera of projects & wrote over 30 songs that have never been used yet, but that they have always planned to in the future...
Established & some what sort after Tammy also worked w/ many other HipHop Legends like Marly Marl, Guru& Kelis/SUPA LUV, the Clipse/Hostage, DITC/Big L tribute, Lil Kim/Notorious K.I.M, Babydoll/N.E.R.D & Ma Dukes/produced by J.Dilla just to name a few.
Tammy's longing to do her own solo project has always been a dream; & after taking 2 years off to recharge & reinvent she's ready to get back in the mix. Pressently Tammy is excited about the process of writing her long awaited 1st album & forming a band; & recently made aware that she has fans all over the globe that have thoughtfully expressed (via Myspace) how much She's missed in the game, Tammy has gained her 2nd wind & soon we'll get to hear her breathe out her new sounds in our ears.
