About Texas A&M University Commerce Select Chorale
The choral program at Texas A&M University-Commerce has a long and distinguished history, led in recent years by conductors Jim Richards, Charles Nelson, William Gorham, Christopher White, and currently, William Witwer. The choirs have sung for the membership of the Texas Music Educators Association and the American Choral Directors Association. They have sung in such esteemed venues as Carnegie Hall and the Meyerson Symphony Center, and have taken performance tours to London, Paris, Mexico City, and Washington DC. The Chorale has performed with the Dallas Symphony for twenty-six years, singing such major works as the Brahms, Mozart, Verdi Requiems, the Haydn Creation, Mendelssohn Elijah. Recently, the Chorale has performed Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem, Haydn's Nelson Mass, Rutter's Requiem, and is preparing for a performance of Bernstein's Chichester Psalms this Fall. Currently, the choral program is comprised of three ensembles. The University Singers is a large mixed ensemble that meets three times a week for 1 hour credit. It is open to all university students with no audition required. The Chorale is a large select ensemble that meets three times a week for 1 hour credit. The Chamber Singers are a select ensemble of musicians that also meet for 1 credit hour. All university students may audition for membership in Chorale and/or Chamber Singers. Choirs at Texas A&M University-Commerce perform frequently on campus and in the community. The Chorale and Chamber Singers often tour throughout the region and the United States. The Chamber Choir performs each year in the annual Feast of Carols. The choral program has ample scholarship money available to qualified students, ranging from $500 to $1250 per semester. Unique to our program is the fact that both music majors and students in other majors are eligible for Music Scholarships. All scholarships are awarded after a student auditions in person for the faculty, completes the University Application and is accepted to both the University and the Music program.
If you are a senior considering a career in music, we encourage you to submit an application for admission to Texas A&M University - Commerce. You should also schedule an audition for admission to the music program and/or scholarship award as soon as possible, so that you will be considered for one of the above-mentioned music scholarships for next year. Audition dates for this year are:
