DJ Tang - UK Hip Hop / RnB DJ and turntablist. Currently resident at the world’s largest Ministry of Sound, in Singapore. You’ll find him in Smoove, the booming hip hop epicenter of this club, rocking the floor for heaving crowds week in week out. Using his extensive catalog of personal re-edits and remixes, Tang blends turntable trickery and ultra smooth mixing with an instinctive sense of what clubbers want music-wise… creating a distinctive sound and party vibe which never fails to impress.
DJ Tang has been a prominent figure in the UK hip hop scene since 1999 when he first entered the DMC Championships there. Reaching the prestigious UK finals no less than 3 times (1999, 2000, 2002), Tang proved himself to be amongst the top ten in the country as he competed against world champions such as Tony Vegas, Prime Cuts and Plus One (aka ‘The Scratch Perverts’),and DJ Woody and Tigerstyles. His performances can be seen on the popular DMC videos which are still sold worldwide. He also reached the finals of the South East Mixing Championships in both 1999 and 2000, and has since returned to judge both contests. In 2001 he fought off fierce competition once again to become champion at the Off the Hook national DJ Battle.
Whilst all the battles and contests were happening, Tang was also rapidly establishing himself as one of the best hip hop club DJs in the South East of England. Playing gigs in big clubs all around the country (London, Derby, Leicester to name but a few), he gained a significant following, and in 2002 started his own night in his home town of Maidstone, in Kent. The night, ‘Medication’, was a huge success…. so much so that it broke with tradition and reversed the trend of clubbers travelling to London to hear quality music. People from the capital would actually make the journey down to Kent each week for a ‘dose’ of DJ Tang’s beats and mixes.
It was at this point in his career that Tang was signed up by renowned Artist Management, ClubClass, who had clearly realized what a valuable entity he had now become, and made him resident at their club nights. Shortly after this, he took off internationally, by becoming a resident DJ at the biggest Ministry of Sound in the world – Ministry of Sound Singapore. The club opened in December 2005, and Tang has been there since day one, playing to hoards of clubbers from all over the world, four nights a week.
Tang’s nights in Smoove (the hip hop/RnB room) were so popular, that he was given a weekly slot in the Main Arena, where he has continued to wow crowds from all over Asia. Since arriving in Singapore, Tang has played international gigs across the continent in places like Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. Fashion Shows have now become part of his repertoire too – playing for top brands like FCUK and Ed Hardy. He has recently produced a mix CD titled Shodown for Universal Music. The CD was released in November 2007 and was number 1 for 5 weeks in HMV Singapore’s dance/urban chart and to date has not left the top ten.
So, what makes DJ Tang’s mixes so precise? Well, despite being involved in the turntablist scene, Tang has never been afraid to embrace new technology. He has produced hundreds of personal re-edits and remixes, and because of this his sound is totally unique. Few other DJs in the world are doing what he is doing in this respect.
With vast musical knowledge combined with a strong technical presence behind the decks, when Tang’s in the house you know it’s gonna be one hell of a party!
