I am from Dublin but have lived in Perth, West Australia, for the past many years. I play the guitar both as an accompanying instrument but also like to play ITM arranged for fingerstyle guitar and do some flatpicking of tunes on the guitar. ..
I play an Australian-made guitar from Melbourne luthier David Worthy. It is a small bodied guitar with a wide neck, cutaway and 12 frets to the body i.e. 2 frets shorter than usual. I also have a Maton guitar (CW80) which works well as a backing instrument.
Other instruments:
Fiddle - used to play this for a few years as a child and then after a very long gap got back into it again at the start of 2006 and it remains a work in progress.
Mandolin - I have a cheap Portugese model but it works.
Acoustic Bass Guitar - a black Fender
Tangled Reel: This is a group I formed in 2003 and it has undergone a number of personnel changes over the years living up to its tangled name. The group plays a mixture of traditional Irish Music with some Scottish, and Cape Breton tunes in traditional and contemporary styles .
The group is on hold at the moment with Jennifer Doyle leaving to go travel the world and Brett Hirsch heading off to Canada for a while.
For Fairbridge Festival 2008 we were joined by Ros Barnes on vocals and Steve Barnes stepped in to help with some of the accompaniment. Another coup for us was to be joined by visiting fiddler from Derry - JP Sweeney.
For March 2009 Steve and Ros joined me again and Stuart Paterson joined us on Wooden flute and Mandolin.
Past contributors: Tom DeRidder (fiddle) unfortunately no longer a part of the group as he has qualified from University and moved to Ireland. Kevin Higgins (flute) joined us for 6 months and played with us at Fairbridge 2004, then returned to Brisbane. Colin Mcleod on Fiddle joined us for Fairbridge 2004 and returned the next year in 2005 after a few proxy rehearsals. Teresa McCullagh - fiddle/whistle left Perth early in 2007 to live in Ireland maybe permanently.
New project involves accompanying Tom Walwyn (Flute and Pipes) and Jennifer Tingley (Cello) in a band called "Westwood". Yeah we just realised there was a lot of wood in the room when we were practicing!
