Whispering into Hearts
The Musical Expression of Emotion
“For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart …” Judy Garland
The musical expression of emotion is not easy to master; however it is the ultimate goal of many artists. A great deal of modern music simply enters our ears and may move our bodies … but seldom our soul. Very few artists can compose soaring melodies intertwining lyrics that whisper into our hearts the full gamut of human experience. Tanja Maritsa is one of these artists.
Tanja's music has the inherent ability to reach out and touch others, and that is her goal as an artist. Tanja says, “I choose songs that have meaning to me and that I really love in the hope that they will touch other people.” It is out of this absolute passion for music and her unique development as an artist that Tanja's sounds of timeless emotion and inner innocence came to life.
"Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else." Judy Garland
During her development as an artist Tanja has indulged in the styles of the old jazz divas such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and began to idolize the “High Priestess of Soul,” Nina Simone. As she developed as a songwriter, she has paid special attention to the song craft of great writers such as Cat Stevens, Nick Drake and John Martyn. However while many artists have influenced Tanja, she stays true to herself. She remains stylistically unique even though others have compared her to the likes of Joni Mitchell and Eva Cassidy. Tanja states, “While these are artists who have influenced me, I want to be genuine in my music and to be myself.”
2008 saw the release of Tanja's debut album 'Child in My Heart' recorded with renowned producer arranger Richard Niles. Originally intended to be an album of covers after hearing her own material Niles strongly encouraged Tanja to write more and ‘thats how I caught the writing bug’ . Promoting her music largely over the internet Tanjas music has already attracted a lot of fans and overwhelmed by the response she was eager to get back into the studio and has just finished recording her second album ‘Fragile’. Already receiving BBC airplay, the result is a truly stunning album including 10 tracks of her own material and two covers, with superb arrangements from Niles. It opens with the light hearted jazzy chanson number ‘Live for Today’ (NOW OUT ON ITUNES AND RHAPSODY !!) and takes us on a journey of love and life from jazz (‘No More the Blues’, ‘Wont You Dance’) to folk (‘The Other Side of the World’, ‘La Catrina’) and world music (‘Fragile’, ’In Love Again’ ‘Libertango’), ending with Tanja’s beautiful melancholic song ‘Fading Grace’. Tanja is backed by some truly wonderful musicians (Richard Cottle, Sam Burgess, Gary O’toole) and has again teamed up with the masterful pianist Gwilym Simcock, and the highly esteemed oud player Naseer Shaama.

“Passion Flower”
“Love is a passion flower It may not last forever While she’s here She’s dressed as natures Finest Princess A radiant, wondrous creation A garden hostess To grace the autumn wonderland A cascade of colours that nature gave To brighten, enlighten and bless our lives Before the winter wasteland Whose darkness does arrive
Love can last forever Through the glorious rebirth of spring To the shining sunburst of summer I know she will return In the autumn clouds Bloom and grow As the wind blows The leaves float Gently to the ground I catch the fall
Love is a passion flower The greatest gift of all.”
Great artists are thankful for their power, whatever its expression, because they know it is a gift for the good of mankind, entailing responsibility to others...
