Instigating intellectual arguments with intelligent people who don't know how to express themselves properly.
Music
I listen to a lot of 80's alternative.
Depeche Mode, The Cure, Adam Ant, The KLF, The TimeLords, Sisters of Mercy, Dead or Alive, Talking Heads, New Order, Soft Cell, Eurythmics, Tears For Fears, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys
I also like New Orleans style piano jazz, such as Dr John. I enjoy Cajun zydeco music from musicians like Beausoleil and Buckwheat Zydeco. I also enjoy Blues as well with such musicians as Keb Mo, Koko Taylor, Ray Charles; I'm also really fond of the stylings of Joliet Jake and his brother Elwood, The Blues Brothers. I always end up having to make Cajun/Creole or some other southern-style cooking when I listen to any of these bands.
Industrial: KMFDM, Front242, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Nitzer Eb, Pig, TKK, LOA, X Marks the Pedwalk, Lords of Acid, Pragha Khan, VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Icon of Coil, Razed in Black, Haujobb, Mindless Self Indulgence.
Techie stuff... Digweed, Pragha Khan, DJ PollyWog, DJ Forrest Green
Like the punk styles of the Ramones, Black Flag, The Stooges, New York Dolls, The Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Iggy Pop.
Movies
I love food symbolism movies:
Mostly Martha
Babbette's Feast
Spanglish
Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover
Vatel
Tortilla Soup
Big Night
non-food movies
The Departed
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Craft
American History X
I have a love for zombie movies, especially George Romero's movies. Zombie movies are probably one of the best genre of dystopian "food" movies.
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Land of the Dead
Diary of the Dead (Didn't feel this one so much though)
I also love dystopian movies in general such as
Mad Max
The Matrix
The Omega Man
I am Legend
Television
Top Chef, the old BBC show CHEF!, Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, Dr. Who, pretty much all of the Star Trek series, Kitchen Confidential (buy it on DVD, too bad it didn't make it as a televised show), No Reservations, Gordon Ramsay's F Word, Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie, Molto Mario, American Eats
Books
Accounting for Taste by Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson. I use Le Guide Culinaire by Georges Auguste Escoffier quite often. Almost anything by MFK Fisher is priceless, as well as James Beard, and Julia Child.
The Larousse Gastronomique is a wonderful book as well. It's latest edition, broken up into sections makes it a much less daunting book to amateur cooks. Harvard Universities' James L. Watson anthology titled, The Cultural Politics of Food and Eating will change the way you look at the world.
Most of the Culinaria series are pretty good for getting some info on the culture and cuisine in a superficial big picture book format with some actual good information. Italian Cvisine:A Cultural History by Alberto Capatti & Massimi Montanari is a great book as well.

About me: I am a chef-instructor at Schenectady County Community College. I am the lead-instructor for Garde Manger, I also teach Classical Cuisine (the school's restaurant class), and a class entitled Modern Culinary Trends and Techniques which will address healthy cooking techniques, Asian cuisines, Latin American cuisines, updating comfort foods for the 21st century and molecular gastronomy.
I am extremely interested in food and culture and their interaction. Most of my interests delve into the cultural history portion of the realm. Why have I gotten into this realm of food? I love to eat, I love to talk about eating and I love to find out why people eat certain things, particularly based on their cultural preferences.
My hospitality industry research interests include sustainability in the industry, food service safety, and consistency in the workplace. Much of my humanities based research and writing is concerned with cuisine history and sociology, especially associated with 18th - 19th century France and U.S.A.
