Tumaini AIDS Prevention Program (TAPP) is a grassroots social movement. “Tumaini” is a Swahili word meaning “hope.” Through solidarity, TAPP seeks to engage in long-term, holistic care with persons living with HIV and AIDS.
The members of TAPP share life together, learning to reject the myth of HIV/AIDS as a death sentence. In spite of stigma and oppression, they find healing in each other. These members handcraft necklaces using recycled paper as an expression of beauty and love.
Where HIV prevalence is high, immense strain is placed on communities and economic structures. Already impoverished areas are facing a greater struggle for basic survival needs. Poverty and stigma make income scarce, often forcing a sacrifice of medical care and education. The necklace craft provides an income for the members as well as the opportunity to start small business projects.
Each bead invites you into the story of a person living with HIV and AIDS. The beads are personal and layered, connected together to create wholeness. We carry these stories with us, acknowledging that our story, told through a bead, may look much the same. May you be transformed with the love that surrounds each necklace.
