this recording was made in feb 2002 using mics into a dj mixer
through an effects processor into a cd recording machine.
the last track on "liganasturandadun" was an unfullfilled requiem
as only a few weeks later rob tarana made a suicide attempt.
had it not been for him eating a pizza pan grill pizza before taking
a massive overdose of sulpuride, prozac & paracetemol would have
been found dead. it was actually to be a completly positive thing as
in the following weeks after recovery from the overdose his mental
health diagnosis was changed from schizophrenia to bi-polar.
bad medication was changed to 99.9% good ~ 1% being an extreme
and random memory loss.
rob slowly regained energy to do things that had been missing from
negative effects of anti-psychotics.
tarana history before this recoding
robs first violin and meaningless syllables were uttered in maple ward.
he was on a section due to extreme mental health relapse. this was his
third and final to date spell on a mental ward.
it happened purely through circumstance. when he was taken in his violin
was brought in but none of the violin scale books and grade eight pieces
he had just started to work on with his teacher ralph dawson.
so he improvised and then soon started to add an improvised meaningless
syllable vocal. even though most of the music he was making didn't sound
too good he realised he was enjoying this far more than working through
the scored out violin concertos.
after his release he took the violin side of this to the street where he had
busked tunes for many years. it wasn't as good for the money but again
was more fun. this did lead to meeting jamie hugues whilst playing on the
moor one afternoon who invited rob to a jam at the kennel.
a fortnight or so later rob joined junta at the kennel and became part
of their band. there were many different people coming down each week
and lots of improvising within simple song structures.
they also made time to jam around others themes. rob at this time was
also writing poetry, mostly angry lyrics about psychriatric doctors, some
spiritually based and used these improvising melodys around them.
also using meaningless syllables this lead to rob booking a gig a bar abbey
in sheffield for a debut asking members of junta who stayed late for the
extra jamming sessions.
this gig happened on 24th november 2001 and by now rob had found a
name for his crime in the glossary of a cd by lakshmi shankar.
tarana - a vocal form using meaningless syllables as text.
this was near enough for him and took the sansrit word tothe printers and
to a feline tattoo shop to have put on his chest (as a reminder?)
when the gig with seven players on stage happened there was a big
lack of meaningless syllables and more improvised vocal using his written
poetry. this was due to people close to rob having concerns for what he
was going to do and being made vunerable and maybe mocked.
the first full tarana style live performance had been made at an open
mic in the deep end on 6th november under the name coal brothers.
pete fuck improvised keyboards with robs violin & vocal for one song.
on 20th dec 2001 rob made his first of ten recordings to tape and made
inlays for the first six out of photos of his flat trashed just before
him being put on his last section.
these have not been released and may never...
the title "between bathing & burning" was taken from a description
jamie hugues made of duplex blues for a flyer for a gig at the barfly.
duplex blues started as chrisy coast on gob iron, rob on violin
improvising using meaningless syllables.
they made seven albums like this then chrisy carried the band forwards
singing her lyrics and playing blues finding different combinations of
musicians to accompany her.
and after
the track title were originally just numbered 1 - 14.
it was after a long conversation with adam bowers rip, rob choose names for tracks.
at this point adam was creating artwork for all the recordings they'd made.
in the last part of 2007, rob decided to rename the tracks using the
meaningless syllable vocal as reference.

The night after the first I-jam, an improvisation night held at the redhouse, and I take a listen to these tracks of this primordial album...splendid, asynchronous, and timeless.
